    MBR repair needed

I recently upgraded from XP to W7.
After installing W7 Home Premium on the former XP drive,
my system fails to complete the boot sequence.

I found that if I leave the installation disk in the drive,
    it does boot up properly.

When I had Drive problems with XP,
I could always boot the installation disk into repair mode
and do the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR commands and that cured most ills.

I have not been able to find a way of doing an equivalent operation for W7.

Can anyone out there help me?

Thank you for your kind attention

    Hello julianbury :)
How have you installed windows 7 over XP ?

Have you done as as Clean Install Windows 7 states ?

Apparently, you are to run Startup Repair , for three separate times, with restarts after every single run.

Better assistance can be given if you can provide us a fell screen snipshot of your disk management window.

    repairing the Windows 7 MBR

I used XP repair mode to clean the boot sector.

I used the XP installation disk to delete the partition and created it again - empty.

I thought that would be the cleanest I could make the disk.

Now that Windows 7 has been installed, the XP repair mode is unable to do anything because the original password to do the FIXBOOT was obliterated by Windows 7.

    That is really ironically annoying!

Boot as you said. When started, click on the start button, and type "disk managenent" (without quotations) in the search bar, click the resulting link, maximize the resulting window.

Take a snipshot of the window either using paint ( Screenshot with Paint ) or using snipping tool (How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums)

Upload the snipshot here : Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

You are in the Win7 era now and don't want to use XP tools any longer. It should be sufficient to delete all partitions and Create new or just click Next to let installer do it. If there are installation issues pointing to Boot Sector corruption all that's needed is Diskpart Clean Command .

There's a reason why Win7 hasn't written its boot files to its partition or 100mb System Reserved if it was created, which we can possibly detect by seeing the Disk Mgmt Screenshot,.

Use Snipping Tool iN Start menu, attach file using Paper Clip in Reply box. If you cannot boot, use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to take a camera snap of the map and listings.

The 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) or Win7 partition should be marked System Active. If not Mark Partition Active to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times. If this fails wipe the HD to start over.

If you need to just repair the "mbr" then it can be done with Acronis TrueImage Boot Disk. I have done it once or twice when changing from W 7 cum Ubuntu Dual Boot Machine to only W 7 booting.

I haven't ever used Macrium Reflect Boot Disk but from the praises that I have come across for this software, I am sure it should be having that capability too.

    MBR repair

I found another way to restore the MBR.

    I installed UBUNTU 12.

    Then I reinstalled Windows 7.

    It worked.

    W7 now boots normally.

Thank you, everybody for all your advice
