    Windows 7 Problem...

Okay, so I finally got my new comp parts in early last week and built my system. By last Thursday I had it all working great. Windows 7 install was quick and easy. Everything seemed to be working good.

Then, I updated my Windows 7 with the optional updates (I had already done the critical/needed updates earlier) on Saturday and after some time and reboots (the system did these automatically) I got a message at the splash screen saying "Applying update x of 1,179,000" (or some arbitrary high number). Since I planned on going to the movies with my brother I thought well now is a good time to leave my computer here and I figured it would be done by the time I got back.

Well, when I got back from the movies, I turned on the monitor and was starring at a blank screen. I tried to see if the computer was asleep and tried to get it out of sleep mode, but nothing happened so I rebooted. Now I cannot even get it to boot in normal mode, safe mode stops at some driver called *classpnp.sys*. Trying to boot from the .iso will let me choose to install or repair, but neither works. The install option just hangs at the background image (same one from when I installed the first time, but with no buttons, etc.), but sometimes will get to the "Setup is running..." screen. The repair option does roughly the same thing. It just stops with my mouse pointer on the screen with the background, but no options - OR no mouse pointer at all, just a background image.

    1) I do not have AHCI on (nor is there any ACHI option in BIOS)
    2) I have upgraded to the latest BIOS firmware
    3) I'm really frustrated that I cannot even attempt a repair or boot into safe mode

    Here are my specs:

    i920/P6T Deluxe v2
    12GB Corsair RAM
    750GB WD HD
    XFX 4890

Please any suggestions or help appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Betamax

what type of harddrive is it? sata..ide..esata? another thing to try is booting up with only 1 stick of RAM, finish the repair install, windows updates etc then reinstate more RAM..

just curious...12GB, is 8GB not sufficient?

It is a sata, and yeah I guess I went a bit overboard on RAM, but oh well. I have not tried removing all but one stick of RAM yet, so once I get off work today I will try that. Seems that I have tried everything else I could think of....just don't know why an optional update to Win 7 would do this and prevent me from repairing or even installing again.

The source would be Microsoft's Windows Update Tool/Website. There were about 38 *optional* updates that I ended up downloading, including a bunch of language packs that I really didn't need (think I accidentally hit the include all button), so I was wondering if that could have been the problem. All I remember before going to a movie was Windows black screen and logo showing a progress type bar (but it wasn't a bar - more of a text) saying *Applying Update x of 1,200,00* or some arbitrary number. I came home and my system was stalled out.

    Windows 7 x64 finally!

    Betamax,
how long did you wait at the point where it seemed to be just hanging?
Just yesterday I was repairing Windows 7 x64 on my drive, after replacing my motherboard. Although the original installation (on another motherboard) was quick and clean, this time it took at least 20 minutes on the blue screen with nothing else than the cursor. I even tried to run the repair or setup functions from the command line, but there was no difference
In the end the repair went on by itself and everything is working fine now.
I have read ppl saying it can take even a few hours in that "suspended" state before installation / repair continues normally.
    I hope this helps

Well originally I waited for about 4 hours of the initial optional updates. Then on subsequent boots I waited anywhere from 5 mins to maybe an hour?

I posted this on another forum and someone suggest I run a utility program on my HD; that it might be a problem with it. Any utilities for HD's that you or someone on here could recommend (preferably the free kind lol)?!?

Also, I booted my system this morning before going to work and I am about to get off and check to see where it stands.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

WD Support > Downloads > SATA Hard Drives > WD Caviar Black

also some info on jumper settings

another thing to try if u can get to a CMD prompt would be to set your system to debug on bootup:

    'bcdedit /debug on'

and 'debug off' for off again.

    hope u get it fixed!
