Need to format now, need Home Premium ITA in the future

Hi. I'm sorry to bug you, but I need a quick answer, since I must do this today in the early afternoon.

I have a friend which has an old XP OEM installation on his computer, which works terribly, is slow and so on, so he wants to reinstall Windows. I told him that installing Windows 7 may be a good idea, since it is about to come out. The problem is that he doesn't need the Ultimate version and doesn't want to spend so much money for an edition he doesn't need (the prices here in Italy are very high).

After talking to him to the phone, we decided yesterday to install Windows 7 RC now, and then upgrade to the final version after it comes out and he physically buys it in the shop. I know that this is not officially supported, but it is possible. Yesterday, at night, I remembered that the RC is available in English only (not in Italian at least), so the only way to have W7 in italian without formatting is installing the RC as Ultimate, upgrade to Ultimate and use the italian language pack, but as I said he doesn't want to buy the ultimate.

    What do you recommend?

Of course an option is getting the RTM on BitTorrent and start using it now as a trial, then "legalize it" when it comes out by buying it in the shop and typing the serial on into an already working installation, but if possible I would prefer avoiding BitTorrent and doing stuff which is not strictly legal.

    Please save me!

    Thanks. :)

    Hello there,

    1. RC to RTM upgrade is strictly not recomended. ( specially RC Ultimate to RTM Ultimate, there is no official way)
    2. If you have the RTM ISO then you can delete the Source/ei.cfg file which will at the installation ask you what edition to install.

If you have a RTM ISO check if it matches with the hashes with Official Microsoft Hashes.

well for the recomendation, i did the second one, well i thought that after gettting my MSDNAA keys, i would justactivate it, but eventually after havingaccess to the MSDNAA downloads, i couldnt resist to download it again, So i had another Download, and Reinstalled again.

RC is not avail for download either, If you already have it downloaded, then use it, well, If you have the RTM, check the hashes, Thats all you need. If the hashes matches, then No probs at all.

    I would recommend
that he simply stay with his "old XP OEM installation on his computer, which works terribly, is slow and so on",
and wait for the 6 weeks or so, to pass.

Then, he could buy what he wants, and can afford, and be completely clean and legal, with the blessings and support of Microsoft, in Italian...

    But, that's JMHO.
    6 weeks ain't that long!

The problem is that he isn't really that experienced, and needs my help for reinstalling Windows. But I don't want to waste my time after university starts, and I were looking for a solution which wouldn't force me to go there again in October. You are perfectly right, but there is a good reason to do it now. :)

Currently, I don't have the RTM, and I would prefer not downloading it, 'cause it would be illegal. Ok, it's not that bad, he is going to buy it some weeks later and using it as a trial, but that's it. Is the RTM the only solution?

By the way, I already have the RC iso, downloaded some time ago.

When university starts, he might appreciate a fully functioning work-horse XP, until Oct. 22nd, or so. (Thesis papers?)

When university starts, you won't have "to waste my time" with his Italian installation:

He boots the selected DVD (x86/64), and that's that...

Give him the SevenForums link, just in case of the inevitable 'glitch'...

Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't think it's very wise letting unexperienced people install Windows alone. It's not that difficult to mess up with partitions. And what if he needs other drivers, for example?
Yes, I know what you are thinking, if they don't start doing things alone they'll never learn, but I don't want to put that theory into action for OS installation, it's too dangerous.

Another thing you must remember is that the average knowledge of English here in Italy is a bit low, especially of technical English. I am not sure that he would be able to do everything alone even with your help. He would post, then would call me and ask me what "You must update your drivers" means, maybe thinking that he should have no drivers since he has no car videogames installed on the computer.

So nobody has a solution to do it now without getting the RTM and without having to do a full reinstall in october then?

EDIT: In any case, thanks for the replies so far. :)

    Good points...

Since these are the 'wee-hours' in my area, I'm sure you'll get more suggestions from better-qualified people than I, as the hours progress...
(including the Mac Ocelot people, the Ubuntu experts, etc.)

At least, they will then have more information to analyze, and suggest their recommended course of action.

If you have any more data that might assist them with their analysis and suggestions, now would be a good time to post it.

Specifically, his current system hardware, which XP SP, HDDs, their sizes/types, etc.
YOUR intent to install Dual-Boot, partitioning intents, etc.

You know, like the "My System Specs" at Bottom_Left of the page, but with HIS computer.
    Good Luck!

Ok, thanks, but I have just talked to him and we decided that he will just reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium from scratch alone. I'm sweating cold , but that's it. After all, he will just have to repeat all the steps I will be doing this afternoon, installing the final version or the RC should be the same. I do really really hope he will not do a mess and that all peripherals are recognized immediately. What should save him is that he is unexperienced but smart.

I have no idea of his hardware, but it's a computer of 3/4 years ago, from HP I think, so it should be well supported. He doesn't need a dual boot, probably he only needs multiple partitions on the disk.

Please pray for me and for him this night.

Thank you for your helpfulness in any case. :)

Hi.. the best thing you could do for your friend, is give him the link to SevenForums ... there are a lot of people willing and able to walk him through the installation... If yer going to learn how to swim, ya gotta get in the water....
