From what I can see in Google, the most likely cause of that error is the DVD reader. Hopefully, that doesn't mean that the burner is also goosed so the disks themselves are goosed as well.

it's definitely worth replacing the drive if you have one you can swap in.

could another possibility be because i made it from the hdd that was failing?
because throughout the whole process it kept asking to make a backup because the hard drive was going to fail(i believe the SMART is what was prompting it)

At what point did it say the key was invalid? - what was the exact error message?

If you completed the install, then the system already has the Default Key in - because it cannot install without a valid Key (it picks the Default Key up along the way if you don't enter one at the right time)

    Post a new MGADiag report.

the os installed with no problem. there is nothing in the corner saying anything about it being ungenuine or anything. i input the 'default key' when it prompted during the install and it took it.
when the os environment came up, i went into computer>properties and it had: 3days untli automatic activation. Activate windows now. I clicked it, and it brought up a box saying:
The Windows 7 Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation
-buy a new product key online
    -type a different product key
-contact microsoft to help resolve this problem

chose to type a different product key. this time i used the one that was pulled from the different programs. it then says: activating windows... the product key is being verified. this might take a few minutes.
    then it displays:
The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 product key.
Please check your product key, and type it again.
i click ok, and it takes me back to where you enter your product key.

*remember this is from the iso i got from digital river, on the brand new hard drive.-v

Any system within the Grace period will pass validation - it should be flagging you for activation periodically (which will fail).
Install the KB971033 WAT Update, and it will clear the file mismatch errors and may give more detail elsewhere

Neither the OEM_SLP Key, nor the Default Key, are valid for activation by MS servers.

i installed the update, and when i went to activate it said:
    Windows Activation
A problem occured when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xC004E003.
For a possible resolustion, click More Information.
You can also contact Microsoft by phone to help resolve the problem.

i uninstalled, then reinstalled, this time not putting a key in during the setup process. updated with the above update, restarted.
it gave me the same error code.
