    Running Win7 After Swapping HDD

    Hi,

I've been having trouble getting Win7 to run on my computer. At first, I'd tried to install onto my HDD normally, via DVD. Upon booting the DVD, I get an Error Code 5, which won't let me boot the DVD to install. So, I've tried running the installer from Windows XP, then doing a clean fresh install that way. Anyways, that was a while ago, ver 7100 I believe, last time I tried.

This time, I tried the same thing, except with Win7 7600. Same thing, Error Code 5. So, I decided to see if Win7 would install on my buddies computer here, with a Celeron 1.3Ghz processor or something.

It installed no problem on his computer, and I installed Win7 completely on it, all the way past the password and name entry. It booted up on his computer to the desktop, where I shut it down, and put the HDD into my computer.

The problem is that if I boot Win7 normally, it hangs after the nifty little animated Windows logo. I see the HDD light blinking, the animation is all pretty on screen, then it freezes up.

I've tried booting into safe mode, and it locks up after the file classpnp.sys I think it is. Currently its sitting at the safe mode screen, as I've read that people have had to let it sit for 10 minutes or more, before it dumps them into safe mode.

The damnedest thing is that it locks up in the same place every time.

I've removed the TV Tuner, and DVD-RW drive, just to see if those had any sort of effect on the performance. They didn't. There isn't much more of anything to remove, as the computer is packed pretty tightly.

Anyways, in case my computer info isn't anywhere near this post (my first time here), my specs are as follows.

The computer is an MPC ClientPro All-In-One 17" model.
    2.8Ghz Pentium 4 Processor
    1GB Ram
    80GB Barricuda 7200.7 HDD

It's just my luck that MPC went out of business this past December. They're going to be of no help whatsoever. I have updated my BIOS to the newest version I could find. Unfortunately thats still around 5 years old. I've also updated the firmware on the DVD drive, but that did nothing.

On a side note, I've tried installing vista, and that gives me the same Error Code 5, so I decided not to even waste my time with trying to install that.

Someone help me please, Windows XP makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Its time for something new, and I'm desperately hoping that doesn't involve buying a new computer.

Hopefully I've answered everything as clearly as possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

On another side note, I've read hundreds of Google-searched pages, and nothing has helped me at all. I'm stuck here.

    Edit:

From what I can tell, it also seems like its locking up right before the main GUI starts up, so it could possibly be a graphics problem. Let's hope not though, because that damn thing is so proprietary that there will be no upgrading.

Also, I seen the system specs at the bottom, but just for the hell of it, the GFX card is an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 (or 9200, same difference I think).

Hi edsfunsite, welcome to the forums.

You may want to have a look at This tutorial I wrote about accessing Device Manager during the install of Windows 7. You can then disable any hardware you think may be the problem
       Note
Example: if you disable GFX then Windows will use the 'Standard VGA adapter' but you should be able to then access the net & download the latest drivers

My advice would be to take 1 extra step during the install.....Enter safe mode immediately after you "press any key to boot from CD/DVD..." Windows 7 (and Vista) will allow the first part of the installation to be completed in safe mode.

    Hope this helps :)

Well, thats a neat little trick. I think I will just go in and disable all the hardware that I can get away with since I have to install Win7 on a seperate computer. Thanks for the rapid response, I'll go test this now, and return with results in a bit.

You will find that there is a wide number of hardware that can be disabled...

First time I used this trick was to disable the CPU and it worked with no performance lag

So, for clarification sake, after I disable what I want to disable in the device manager, I reboot, or hit the OK button on that alert? Then when it reboots, I let it go normally, boot how it wants to, and it'll finish installation without those things enabled?

Yes, it will finish the installation normally. You can then download any drivers you may need once your successfully @ the desktop :)

There seems to be a decent probability that I'm reading everything wrong tonight. You said to run the very first part of the installation in safe mode? I've tried running compmgmtlauncher in a shift+f10 cmd prompt, but that says that compmgmtlauncher is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. So, I'm just going to assume that its not available yet, and continue running the first part in safe mode.

Ah, sorry. You would need to do the first part of the installation (copying files) in safe mode. Then after the first re-boot, run in safe mode. It's here (2nd boot) that you will be able to SHIFT+F10 then compmgmtlauncher :)

Right, well, I did all of that, and Win7 still locks up in the same exact place it did before. I disabled everything I could with the Device Manager when I booted into safe mode the second time. It went through, did its thing, then gave me a desktop and everything, it was running just fine. Also, after it booted to the desktop, I went to the control panel, and device manager again, disabled a bunch more stuff. I stuck it in my other computer, the computer I want it to be in, and it locks up just the same.

I can't begin to describe in words how much this pisses me off.

I guess that the MPC POS wasn't meant to run anything after XP. Unless there are any more suggestions or things to try, I'm just going to give up on this entire thing. I wonder how far I can throw my PC...

On a more serious note though, I was wondering what you think would happen if I stuck the HDD in my computer before the second reboot of the installation. You think that would make any difference at all?

So nobody has had any problems like this? Am I a unique case here, or did most people give up and buy something newer?

Are there any steps I could take to get Microsoft to look at the problem closer?

Any suggestions really, from the mundane to the extreme would be super duper appreciated. I'm sure I can't be the only one who can't get Win7 to run on a system that it should run on.
