Service Pack 1 Fails, error 8004100E

I've spent a day and a half trying to get service pack 1 installed on a machine.

I've tried shutting down my security programs, installing it manually, and the fixits from this post: Win 7 SP1 fails with 800B0100 error.

I'm beginning to think maybe my error is different from the common ones you see everwhere online. In fact, I haven't seen 8004100E referenced anywhere else in the contxt of the service pack 1 failure.

Does anyone on this forum have any ideas, or even hints?

When you say "manually" have you tried the Standalone installer? Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1 | Download Service Pack

You can always get a Clean Reinstall with the latest installer. Many consider that daunting, but to many others it is better than getting a new computer!

Yeah, it was the Standalone installer that I meant. I've tried it several times, after different preparations, and it never works any better for me than the general update utility.

Yeah, I think it might come to this. I keep hoping the solution is right around the corner. But, of course, I could've had everything reinstalled by now.

I haven't been able to find anything else to try. I'm reloading Windows and starting from scratch. Oh well.

Follow the steps in the blue link to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which are the same for retail.

Then save a Windows 7 backup image of your finished setup and you'll never have to get reinstall again.
