    Drive Letter F, A or B

When I do a first time install of Win7 can I choose the drive letter for the DVD RW or will it default to F and I can not change it?

If I can change it is there any reason that I can not name it A or B?

Is there any reason that I can not name my extra hard drives A or B?

I will leave the OS drive at C.

    Regards,

    Rod

    Hi Rod,

Drive letters A and B are system reserved ones used for floppy drives (if present).

Yes , you can change it any time, using disk management (Right click on my computer icon, and select manage ).

For common drive letter assignments, you can see Drive letter assignment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , a nice article there, but it is not hard and fast to follow.

If however, floppy drives are not available nor ever will be.....
i.e. It's not locked as in XP

I have an external drive (3 TB) with an A Drive letter. No problem. Months now.

You can change non-OS drive letters in Disk Mgmt, but it's best to do it during install or reinstall so that nothing is yet linked to the drive: Drive Letter - Add, Change, or Remove in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums

It's kind of obsolete now but the letters "A & B" were originally reserved for Floppy Drives FDD.
