Windows 7: What's the benefit of UEFI and install Windows in UEFI mode?

I am not sure if this subforum is the right place, if not, pleases help me transfer to the right forum...

I recently just build a new setup with Asus P8Z77-V LK, this motherboard comes with UEFI boot and legacy BIOS boot support.

So I tested install windows 7 in both mode, and I didn't find any advantage of UEFI consider it is a new technology been promoted quite a lot for recent years.



The benefit I found is: a graphic BIOS setup, which is useless to most users if you don't OC. Even you did, I still find using keyboard to navigate through the menu is much easier than mouse.

Faster boot time? very negligible, could be 31 seconds compare to 28 seconds. As I timed use my stopwatch, the value could include a few seconds human error as well.

Support boot from > 2.2TB HDD? nowadays most user use SSD as boot drive so this really doesn't matter.

GPT disk partition? don't see any benefit here compare to legacy MBR...

Anyone can enlighten me what is the advantage of UEFI here?

Thanks for adding information about EFI BIOS which present a problem for many during installation and repairs.

For this reason alone, I would advise disabling EFI BIOS in BIOS boot order or choosing Legacy BIOS in BIOS setup, installing normally to an MBR disk.

Wiping a HD already formatted as GPT disk with Diskpart Clean Command can clear the way for it to install as MBR. Sometimes it also takes runnning the command "Convert MBR" to change disk from GPT.

Thanks for the reply. So you mean that the EFI only introduce problem but not benefit to end users?

It may come in handy later with the ginormous HD's which are coming needing unlimited partitions, but we have a way to workaround partition limits anyway - 3 Primary and unlimited Logical (data) partitions.

Otherwise many of the important workarounds for Windows 7 Installation, automated boot repair, Multi-Booting, etc which were pioneered here need retooling for UEFI installation and repairs. This is daunting with the workload we have as the busiest tech forum. We welcome more help especially experts at EFI like Saltgrass who has rejoined us.
