ubuntu usb

Hello
Prior to installing Ubuntu, I downloaded it from the site per their directions to be able to view it first.
After setting the boot order apprporiately to boot from usb, the screen stayed black and I needed to use alt, cntrl, del to boot into Windows. What can I do to view it from the usb stick?
I did not note the version of Ubuntu because it was not evident at the Ubuntu page which pronmpted the download.
I have Win 7 and the download took about 8 minutes with Windows installer.

I feel badly because I forgot where I posted this so have cross posted.
When I downloaded to desktop, my a/v and MBAM both flagged it so I removed it. I told this story elsewhere in the forum and cannot remember where so am cross posting again. I do niot take it lightly as there are rules for a reason - I do apologize.
I am trying to download Ubuntu to flashdrive and run it from there as you would in a VM or in the desktop with a dual boot. I wantted to know if this is feasible and functional but need a good, clean installer to do it.
I assume the downloader is the reason it did not work.

You could also try YUMI. It will even download the Ubuntu ISO for you. YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) | USB Pen Drive Linux

Let me google that for you
On this page, you find lots of options for this.

Have you tried UNetbootin? It's a awesome software; It also downloads the Ubuntu ISO! Very easy to use! Recommended! UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads

LinuxLive USB Creator seemed to be able to run without rebooting. I have to look into it.

A quick look suggest it uses VirtualBox to run Linux without rebooting.

You could just use the full VirtualBox and create as many Linux VMs as you like. I have several at the moment, including Ubuntu. It's free. https://www.virtualbox.org/

VM

Hello
I only have a desktop and laptop used by the family.
If I do come across and older one, as these are new, I Will use it to experiment.
I did install that VM once but I lack the ability to know which choices to select as they are not intuitively obvious.

I therefore was lookng for the easiest way to use Ubuntu.
I thought the flash drive was a good idea but after an 8 minute download using Win installer, the screen was black.
If I could avoid booting that would be great so i am trying to weigh my options right now.

I appreciate the heads up about the installer I would have made a problem with.
