I'm adding SSD for the operating system and want to use the existing dual boot HD for my data drive. Need to make it 1 partition and get all the existing win7 and win8 files removed.
I can get to Disc Management screen but not exactly sure what steps to take.
Do you intend to do a clean install to the SSD?
If so, disconnect the HD before installing to the SSD.
After the SSD boots Windows OK, reconnect the HD and do what you wish with it---presumably delete all partitions and reformat.
Or have I misunderstood your intentions? I assume you want to get rid of the dual boot?
Yes, I'll clean install SSD, with existing HD unplugged.
When SSD is up and going I plug in old HD that has dual boot on it.

The partitions that are on the HD right now will still be there.
You would have to delete those partitions, leaving unallocated space. Then reformat that unallocated space into a single partition for your data.

Yes, by deleting the partitions which is the correct way to uninstall the OS, everything will be wiped away and give you a clean slate to create a new data partition or two if that's what you want.
I would first sort all of my data into either OS's User folders then back those up externally. After install and formatting of the HD, copy these User folders back onto the HD, rightclick each to link it to the related Win7 Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums. You'll need to create a Library for Downloads which is important for saving your installers in one place.
This is the best way to save space on an SSD without compromising speed. Install programs only to the SSD.
