On the disk management I see:
(C) and then
System Reserved and then
W7SP1_HOMEPREMIUM

Tentatively, that's probably OK.

But a picture would be best.

Also look at Device Manager and look for yellow exclamation points. You get there through the control panel or by typing Device Manager into start button search box.

Did you get Microsoft Security Essentials up and running?

Is Windows updated?

Is Windows activated?

Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management drive map and listings:

1. Type Disk Management in Start Search box.
2. Open Disk Mgmt. window and maximize it.
3. Type Snipping Tool in Start Search box.
4. Open Snipping Tool, choose Rectangular Snip, draw a box around full map and all listings.
5, Save Snip, attach using paper clip in Reply Box.

Tell us what is on each partition.

The only yellow exclamation mark I see is the ethernet controller. That's because I was waiting to plug in my modem to see what you would say about the disk management, trying to take it one step at a time.
The windows update is asking me to find an antivirus program online. When I hook back up to the Internet do I click on that to take me to Microsoft Security Essentials?

One thing at a time.

Most important right now: anti-virus and Windows updates, both of which require a working Internet connection.

Do what you have to do get those 2 things. Then move on to screen shots and exclamation points in Device Manager.

I am trying to connect to the Internet, it is telling me it does not detect a properly installed network adapter, and if I have one I should re-install the driver.

That message just means your internet isn't working. It could be anything. Have you got a USB adapter or is it a card inside your PC? If it is the USB, just take it out and stick it back in and see if that helps.

I'm not sure what the NIC driver situation is on a default install using only the Windows disc. I'm not sure if you should normally expect to have a NIC driver installed from that disc----I always use a separate previously downloaded driver.

Greg should know the fine points.

In the meantime---unplug the cables from your modem for maybe 60 seconds, then reconnect them.

I usually have to do that after a fresh install to re-establish my net connection.
