Go to the Dell Support Downloads webpage and put in your Tag number from the Dell Service tag attached to the machine, or look it up by model number. Then find the ethernet driver, download it to a stick or CD, install it to get online through the connection icon in bottom right System Tray.

Once online, install your Windows Updates starting with any newer drivers under optional Updates.

Update: I put the disc in and got the ethernet controller, which got my Internet back up. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials, did a quick scan, now I am installing updates.

Excellent! You are choppin' in tall cotton.

Then post a pic of Disk Management and make sure you have no yellow exclamation points in Device Manager.

Get Microsoft Security Essentials set up to scan on a schedule---maybe a "quick scan" weekly. As long as you see the green icon with a white checkmark near the clock, all is well. It will turn orange if it's complaining.

I set a scan schedule for Microsoft Essentials. I know all the updates are going to take a long time. This is going to be my last batch right now, as I have to take my dog to the vet. When I get home I will resume Windows update and then post a screenshot of Disk Management. Thank you for all the help.

I am back. I did a full scan it took about 50 minutes. Is that normal? Can I download Google Chrome now, I feel so unsafe on Internet Explorer?

Your Virus Program would have told you if anything was wrong. If you did not see any window popup that told you something was wrong, you are OK. If you are doing a complete scan, it can take a while. I set mine so that it works during the night and I don't have to wait on it. Go get the Google Chrome.

Yeah, that's not unusual for a "full" scan. The "quick" scans usually take only a minute or so.

Google Chrome is pernicious spyware. I'd use Firefox instead.

You can try to turn off the spying using Opt Out of Network Advertising but there is really no taming Google's spying except not to allow any Google into msconfig>Startup or >Services and stay signed out of Google searches done from the secure search box in Firefox or IE9 which actually protects your from them.
