    How do I install windows 7 HPsp1 64 bit on a dell xps 8100 from a disc

Not a computer genius nor a complete goof either.. so please be patient!!

    I have a dell XPS 8100 with windows 7 Home premium sp1 64 bit

Recently this computer got a virus transferred to it from a camera card.

I took this computer to a local computer shop and the tech removed things which made my computer, in short, not the dell i purchased 2 years ago.

I contacted dell and received an OS disc for windows 7 home premium.

when i use the F8 prompt to get into restoring my computer to factory settings.. This is the first few things that confuse me as do many...
First: There is no prompt in the F8 to reset to factory condition, only a option to restore image.
2nd: I try to use advanced commands to find the OS disc which i have in the D drive but it never finds it..

Any guidance or suggestion would be of great help..
    thanks so much
    Greg

Hello brocker1234567 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

I strongly suspect the place you brought the system into likely wiped something necessary to see the restoration option available while cleaning the system up for you. With the recovery disk you have now received from Dell that will only see a full clean install of 7 go on once it wipes the C primary clean during the installation process.

The recovery disks acts just like any other full install media but is Dell branded. Once the clean copy of Windows is back on and you enter the OEM product key found on the sticker attached to the machine itself you will then need to go to the Dell support site to download the updates for that model. Since you already have the 7 media to use just follow the rest in the guide for performing a clean install of 7. Clean Install Windows 7

Just wondering why you didn`t attempt to remove the virus yourself. Microsoft Security Essintials and Malwarebytes is all you need to combat them. 1 other question , do you scan items b4 you open them ? This is a basic rule and should be practiced.

Let us know how your progress is going.

Once he brought it to the shop whoever worked on it decided to nuke the drive and put a fresh non OEM copy of Windows back on as well as wiping the Dell wares. I guess you brought into a shop instead of trying to remove the bug yourself.

The recovery disk they sent may still work along with the hidden recovery partition if that wasn't changed any at the shop you brought the system to. But just be prepared for a clean install where you may have to run around for all updates. Some of the prepackaged Dell wares will be found on the download page under utilities most likely while not any trial versions for Norton or McAFee(Fail).

Most of the Dell computers use F11 to start the recovery process. In your case there should be a recovery partition on the hard drive that will be used when you press F11. If not then simply put the recovery DVD from Dell in the DVD drive and boot it by pressing F12 to get to the boot menu then select the DVD drive.

The first place I would be looking would be in the User guide that comes along with any new system. The support site for anything else is the next stop to look everything up for that particular model. But even with the restore option just remember everything you have now on the C primary will be wiped cleaned.

If Dell provided you with a Reinstallation DVD then boot it by tapping the Dell F12 key at boot, follow these steps to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

I ( you ) fixed it!!!! My computer is working like new again!!!
I used the f 12 and was able to do a clean install. THe only problem I had was I didnt have a network adaptor once the install was complte. I accidently found it on my dell utility drivers disc.. Remember.. N O V I C E here!!!!!!!

Once I got back online.. I installed a new version of Norton's anti virus, ran microsoft malicous spyware removal, updated alll of microsofts updates, and downloaded Dells recommended updates.

My machine seems????? to be working like new!!!

1: I never got a prompt to enter a microsoft key number.. Is that a problem>???

2: Is there a program i can dl from the net and and save to a disc to destroy future potential viruses?
3: Should I manually scan my Sd card in the future... im sure I should... But, I thought my anti virus scanned this automatically???

    FYI
I'm almost certain I contracted this virus from my SD card.
While on vacation, I inserted my SD card in my sister n laws Mac book Pro and a freinds Hewlett packard.. Both computers seemd to work fine and still are today.... But once I inserted the SD in my computer to look at vacation pics... My computer started freezing, and slowly just become totally unresponsive in all programs...

4: Do you all think this was the source of the virus??

Once my computer had the virus I coud not get online or do anything or at least, i didnt know how to...

Once again, THANKS to you ALLL!!! I will recommend this site to everyone!!
    Thanks so much!!!!

Greg, the Dell reinstallation DVD has activation baked in.

Read over the steps again in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to make sure you covered all of the steps, since some of what you mention is handled therein - like being prepared with the wireless driver on a stick, recommended AV and other programs which will keep your perfect reinstall problem-free.

Read also the Special Notes for Dell Owners at the end of the tutorial for how to handle the Dell Recovery and Tools partition. Recovery most likely will not run now after a Clean Reinstall so you can delete it. Try booting Diagnostics tools via F12 to see if it still runs in which case you can keep it if you want it although it's available for download online.

Install and update Malwarebytes, Plug the SD card in and immediately rightclick scan it .
Then uninstall any bloatware AV, install Microsoft Security Essentials to do the same, then run a full system scan.

The Norton install is likely the trial version for Symantec's av program they sitll on OEM machines. If you are not planning to buy it dump it!

As for not being prompted to enter a product and activate Windows you have the branded OEM recovery disk that restores the OEM preactivation along with the fresh copy of Windows. As long as the hidden recovery partition remains intact the branded disk will pull most of the drivers for board like chipset, video, and sound from there. The software disk provided will have the rest including Delll tools.
