Fresh windows 7 install, windows updates fails and other problems

    Hello all,

My computer recently caught a virus and I had to reformat my computer. I have reformatted this machine before without a single problem.

First problems appeared after the initial re-format and install. Installing various games and drivers would wind up alerting me that various dll files were missing. After following a 10? step guide to troubleshoot these errors nothing worked and the final step was to conduct another fresh install of windows.

I was also considering that maybe my hard drive was going bad so I did a fresh install on my second hard drive and the same problems occurred.

I did however, manage to get one of the installs to remain relatively stable, but it still has the same problems.

And finally, I purchased a brand new SSD (samsung 830 series) and did a new fresh install to it. Everything seemed to go fine until I began running windows updates (after getting Security essentials installed and my video drivers). Windows updates got hung up on the on screen in application install screen in the middle of approximately 130 updates. I then clicked the stop installation button and nothing happened. The updates screen would not change. I left it alone for awhile and came back. Still nothing. I then told the computer to restart. It then proceeded to hang on the shutdown screen. (i let this remain overnight hoping it would shut down) It did not. I was forced to hard reset the system and now the same issue is happening after installing microsofts fix it app that supposedly fixed issues that would cause these problems.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction on what to do about this?

EDIT: Windows update screen just completed or cancelled the install, and did not move on to remaining updates. Will attempt restart.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

If you didn't follow the Best Practices for Clean Reinstall after resetting BIOS to defaults, setting SATA controller to AHCI, unplugging all other HD's and peripherals.

Drivers are handled differently in Win7 than before so make sure to read and understand that part. If you changed out any from what Win7 wants then I would do it over. If you're running with the installer chipset then you can try the one from the Support Downloads webpage for your model PC or mobo.

As you work through the Troubleshooting steps post back results as there may be other steps suggested.
