upgrade windows 7 32bit to 64 bit problems

I wanted to upgrade my windows 7 from 32bit to 64bit, I checked the PC and it said it was suitable to do so. I inserted Disc with upgrade 64 on it and when I tried to reboot a message came up say that it couldn't open the files as it was running 32bit. So I then restored the PC to it's former Vista 32 bit system and in doing so cleaned the drives. (I had backed up my files but not, I'm afraid, my drivers) I then tried to run the 64bit Windows 7 disc and it again said no. So I installed the 32bit thinking that I could upgrade to 64. That won't work either and now I can't connect to the internet to get directly.
So, 1) why won't it read the 64 bit disc?
2) did I lose my drivers and if so how do I get them back.

Help me please as it's driving me mad!

thanks

Hello Phil, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You will not be able to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. Instead, you must delete/format the 32-bit installation and do a clean install of 64-bit.
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
When finished, you will need to install 64-bit drivers for your devices as well instead of 32-bit drivers. You can usuallly get them from the device manufacturer's driver support download page.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

You can't "upgrade" from 32 bit to 64 bit. You have to do a complete new (clean) Install of the 64 bit.

Thanks for advice, but still not sure about a clean install. I've read the tutorial but not sure about Make sure that the CD/DVD drive is selected first and your HDD second in the boot priority order in your BIOS settings. How do I do that?

You've apparently been trying to run the disk from the OS on there now which won't work. You must boot the disk to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Reboot your computer, tap the key given on first screen for BIOS setup to enter, look for Boot Order settings. Using the keys shown there, move DVD drive to first device to boot, then HDD. How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

Or you can choose the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key instead which will give you a boot menu to directly boot the DVD drive, start the install.
