HDMI install / no screen

I've been running a media center on Ubuntu for over a year and decided to install 7 (RC 64bits) as a dual boot. The computer is connected by a HDMI connection to a 720p tv (onboard HDMI // Asus P5E-VM HDMI). Setup went fine up to the screen that says "Setup is starting services".

My screen goes black and the tv says no signal. I'm assuming a driver kicks in and screws the whole thing. I tried going in safe mode but setup is not allowing it to continue the install. I tried F8 and selecting the low resolution but it didn't change anything.

I don't have a monitor to continue the install via VGA. Is there an easy solution that does not involve gessing what is on the screen. I have a laptop with 7 on it if there is so kind of remote setup I could do.

According to the Asus website, your motherboard doesn't support Windows 7, which might explain why the HDMI doesn't work during the installation process. I'd borrow someone's VGA monitor to see if you can get through the install.

@stevenfr - Your mobo will support Windows 7 just fine. There is a conflict in the screen resolution presented to the TV (which acts as a monitor secondary to its primary design function).

Windows 7 uses the hardware differently than earlier versions - notice the fundamental change in the boot screen. You might try /noguiboot in msconfig.

I do not have a solution for you. I just needed to correct kegobeer's misinterpretation of no Windows 7 driver support at Asus. I have a P5 class board and no problems - but I also have a TV/monitor designed for this use. If you must use Asus provided drivers, get the Vista 64 ones.

Let me clarify - Asus does not list the P5E-VM in the Windows 7 OS compatibility section of its website.

There are no Windows 7 drivers available for the motherboard, which in of itself is not surprising - quite a few motherboard manufacturers don't have Windows 7 drivers available yet. However, if Linux installs via HDMI, and Vista installs via HDMI (unknown - the OP didn't state if that has been attempted), but Windows 7 does not, there is a compatibility issue that can't be solved at this time, unless a no gui option exists that may bypass the issue. Asus may release a BIOS update that fixes the problem, but I suspect that may not happen, as that motherboard isn't listed as having Windows 7 logo certification.

Sometimes I do check for driver support before I respond to a question.

What's the video driver on that motherboard? I have a laptop that uses the Intel 4500HD, and it works just fine with Windows 7 and HDMI output, provided I load the proper drivers for it.

Do you see the BIOS screens before the screen goes black?

This morning, I read every post in the mobo forum at Asus regarding this issue. There are numerous complaints across multiple operating systems. Unresolved is the common status.

The problem seems to revolve around the G35 chipset.

I would hook up a regular monitor to your PC get it up on the screen and install proper video driver.

Shut down, restart with HDMI plugged in.

Better yet if you have HDMI to DVI you can use that on most monitors to preset proper resolution.

The video crashes just before the screen where I have to input my username. When the os is loading, I see the "vista style" moving slider instead of the new 7 one.

I waited on the blank screen about 5 minutes after all HDD activity has stopped. I guess I have to find someone with a monitor.
