Plextor M5P installed :-). What to enable/disable

Hi,

I received my Plextor M5P 512 GB today .
Could not resist and it is already installed and running...like the wind! What a difference compared to my Seagate Momentus 7200.4. I'm running a Tecra R840 laptop, and now everything loads quickly! The Win boot is phenomenal .
Everything went smooth, which was great! Zero issues, and I restore it to factory state and then removed almost all the bloatware/sw that I do not use/need!

Now I need (?) to make some tweaks, right ?

1- Defrag is already schedulled to never...so it is ok, right?
2- Should I disable restore (restore points)? (pros/cons)
3- Should I disable Write-caching to the ssd? (pros/cons)
4- Should I disable "allow files in this drive to have contents indexed in adition to file properties" ?

Anything else? (I just want a robust and reliable system! I do not need anything faster...!)

I will appreciate all the help .

Regards,
paulo

My opinion:
1 yes.
2-4 no.

Other than defrag, why not just treat the SSD as any other drive. That is what I'm doing. If the technology is not good enough to work that way then I'll move back to a 7200 or 10K SATA drive when the SSD dies.

Have you considered a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get a perfect install not corrupted by the factory bloatware and useless duplicate utilties?

If not you can mitigate some of the corruption using Clean Up Factory Bloatware

Thanks!
I've checked for corrupted files after the Factory restoe + Clean Bloatware! Everything is just fine!
At the moment the so called Bloatware is minimal in my system (I like some Toshiba Apps and functionality...maybe Windows 7 have those builted in too, I do not know yet!). I will try to remove, uncheck etc some more after understand what they do and what the "danger" for the computer!
For now I'm very satisfied with the M5P. Installation could not have gone any better! Zero issues, everything went smooth :-)

Thanks for all the advices :-)

Toshiba apps are bloatware which are not needed. But if you like one then you can keep it. I would uncheck them all in msconfig>startup and msconfig>Services (after hiding all MS Services) to decide for sure.

Hi,

Disabled all but 2 toshiba services at startup/ services!
Laptop is running smooth, with no issues!

But I found that the Wireless LAN is the last think to be active, it seems to take a liitle long (or, the boot is so quick...now it is a 22 secs, that it seemm the wirelles activity starts to late!!!)

A will run autostart from Sysinternals to see if I found more toshiba stuff starting/active!
I will post here what I will find!

Are you still using Toshiba Wireless? It is the perfect example of a duplicate service installed by the computer maker when there is already a better version built into Windows 7.

Turn off Toshiba Wireless in its preferences, then configure wireless in the bottom right System Tray by clicking on the five bar Connection icon. If there is any problem rightclick it to run Troubleshooter.

Try turning off everything at msconfig>Startup and msconfig>services (after Hiding All MS Services) to see if the problem persists.

If so examine the Startup sequence using Soluto – Anti-Frustration Software to see what is hanging it.

If you want you can also turn back on the Toshiba Wireless utility to see if that solves the hang if nothing else does.

Hi Greg,

Using sysinternals, I disabled all Toshiba stuff except 2 services that I really like (I don't know if there's native Win similars...). One is the Health Monitor that shows you the baterry health, processor and internal temperatures, ssd health, etc! The other one is FlashCards: it let you after pressing FN, see at the top of the screen the functions associated with the FN Keys and let you "manipulate" those functions! I know that if I disable this one I will have erratic functionality of the FN keys!!!
I disabled lot of other stuff from Intel, AMD, etc...and the lap is running great :-)
