Setup was unable to create a new system partition..no OS installed

Hello,
I was trying to install Windows 7. However, before doing so, I moved all my data onto the same hard disk on to a different partition. When I pressed the boot options and booted using a Windows 7 USB and tried to install, it gave me the error “Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition”. I formatted the C drive (thinking that would resolve my issue as I had data backed up on D and was anyways installing Windows again) and now do not have Windows on my system. I read on another forum that I would have to either
a) Convert my data drive D (my data partition) into a static drive from a dynamic drive or
b) I have to delete that partition all together.
I do not want to do the second. I do not even have DOS to back up my D drive and do option B. please tell me my options right now.
Can I
i) Install Windows on an external hard drive and try and get the data out of my inbuilt hard drive?
ii) I just downloaded a third party software called testdisk. I don’t know how to run it though as I get the error saying no OS found right now.
Or is there something else. I am very worried.
Thanks!

Do you have a Dynamic disk now? If so download and burn to CD with Windows Image Burner the last free version of Partition Wizard to offer Conversion to Basic for free: pw422.zip ISO - Windows Live . Then boot it and convert the HD to Basic: How to convert dynamic disk to basic disk with Partition Wizard?

Your data should be safe since this is non-destructive process but it is always best to have it backed up. At any time you can copy out your data to external using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
or Paragon rescue disk to recover data.

Now see if you can use Custom install Drive Options to partition as you wish. If not try booting free Partition Wizard CD to create and mark Active an NTFS Primary partition in C:
How to Set Active/Inactive partition -Partition Wizard Video Help.
Partition Wizard Create Partition - Video Help

If this fails back up your data to wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command.

Yes, that's why I posted the PW CD for you.

Click the blue link to download the ISO, then rightclick ISO to burn it to disk using Windows Image Burner or use ImgBurn.

Watch the video tutorial on how to do the conversion from booted CD.

While in Partition Wizard you can also create an NTFS Primary partition and mark it Active to choose when you boot in to Clean Install Windows 7 again:
Partition Wizard Move/Resize Partition Video Help.
How to Set Active/Inactive partition -Partition Wizard Video Help.

Take your time and double-check everything, or ask back any question to be sure.

I tried writing the ISO you recommended (on the skydrive site) to a USB disk..

It gives me an error saying "Operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system"
Press any key to restart

Who said anything about writing it to flash stick? I gave you the exact steps to burn to CD - twice. If you wanted flash stick you should have said so.

You have to buy the latest version of PW Pro to get Dynamic>Basic conversion and the ability to write it to stick. It is also on Hiren's BootCD From USB Flash Drive however it also isn't a free feature there as far as I know.
