What happened to your recovery partition - how big is D?

if D is the Vista partition, and C is the 7 partition - simply mark the 7 partition Active and run startup repair from the 7 dvd 3 times.

I'm thinking D was the Vista recovery partition. Can I just delete this partition and create a new recovery partition for 7?

If it was the recovery partition it would be small 6-10gb.

Otherwise it is your Vista partition.

You can create a separate partition and store an image of your 7 installation on that. Then if necessary - restore that image.

There are many programs that will do that .
