Sony vaio won't boot up

Hi, this is my first post

I have a Sony vaio vgn-fw140e that worked pretty well until yesterday. I had Ubuntu installed on it and then decided I didn't want it, so I went to control panel>programs and features, and I uninstalled Ubuntu from there. Then I was planning to upgrade to windows 8, so I turned off my system. When I restarted it, it said errrr grub rescue. So I replaced the HD and rebooted it with an installation DVD in the computer. But the computer wouldn't boot from it, and now I'm stuck on the "no operating system found" screen. And yes, I changed the first boot priority to the optical drive in bios. Can anyone help me?

Thanks for the quick reply, but the problem is, the computer won't boot from the cd at all. I tried a lot of key combinations but it still won't boot.

Boot into BIOS setup to reset to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS.

Then boot the DVD by tapping the Sony f2 one-time BIOS boot menu key. Does it prompt to "Press any key to boot disk?" If not burn another DVD for your licensed version from Step 1/2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Once you can boot a disk open a Command Line by pressing Shift + F10 at first screen of booted DVD, then Mark Partition Active the WIn7 partition or it's 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it). Then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If DVD still refuses to boot (user error is 99% of the cause) go back to Steps 1/2 of Reinstall tutorial to write latest official ISO to flash stick, try booting it under USB, Removable or HD's.

No key combos needed. To call up a One Time Boot menu it is either one of the F Function keys or Delete or Esc key.

Or you can get to the BIOS setup screens by one of the F keys and then change the boot order to the DVD drive first.

Best thing to do is go to the Sony website and download the Manual for your model and RTM to find out how to boot from the DVD drive.

Thanks, but I solved the problem by creating a bootable windows 8 USB and then booted from it. Then I was able to reinstall windows.
