It's not something that you should do unless it fixes a problem that you're having. A failed BIOS update can brick the board. (Some Asus boards can be rescued by replacing the CMOS chip, available from their estore in the US and Canada.)
I've been rather casual about BIOS updates for about 15 years. Never had a problem until earlier this year, when I killed a couple of Z68 boards from different manufacturers. (Looks like UEFI boards are more persnickety than the older BIOS boards.)
If you must do a BIOS, update, it's not particularly difficult. I'd recommend reading your manual (available for download from Asus, if you've misplaced the original). There are several methods for doing the upgrade; I'd recommend EZ Flash.
