Cant install

I am trying to install Windows 7 ultimate on my buds pc. It is a Compaq EVO P4 2.68 g, 512 ram. I ran the compatibility test and it said that i could install it,a clean install only. So that is what i did but it got to Updating registry just before it gets to completing install and fails. It just says set up could not be completed and undoes the install back to XP. Do you think that this pc just cant handle it or maybe a physical problem with the mobo or something?

Antman is correct. Win 7 requires atleast 1GB ram for 32-bit. And 2GB
for 64-bit.
Upgrade the ram and you should be good to go!

As you said that the setup fails and it undoes the installation back to Xp. Are you doing a clean install by formatting the partition and then freshly installing Windows 7?

Good catch Dinesh. If the partition was formatted the failed Windows 7 install could not go back to XP.

First, get at least 1GB RAM if 32bit and 2GB if 64bit, as mentioned.

Backup your functioning XP partition, then format the partition and try installing Windows 7 again.

I guess the OP is doing an upgrade install which is impossible.

Edit: Windows 7 can be installed on 512MB RAM. The fact is, that it will run slow. but yes, it will run.
