Now lbarrie the BIOS key issue a bit OT but mine always gets into the BIOS with F2 but you need to be tapping it when you power up not wait until anything else happens.

If you want my two cents worth and you have any problems with the Asus machine I can tell you - you are far better off contacting the local and I mean local Asus service centre and not the global or so called "local" one which is invariably situated in the Philippines. You will get more joy out of them that way than any other.

I have an Asus ROG gamer laptop and it took four months of trying to get my 7 install fixed from 8 and be able to download the driver for the dedicated GPU that is installed and just by chance I hit on the phone number for the Sydney service centre here in Australia and it was fixed within an hour.

Sorry Greg but thought it was worth mentioning.

The BIOS key doesn't work when a WIndows 8 PC is locked down by Secure Boot. You must Boot to UEFI Firmware Settings from inside Windows 8

Disable Secure Boot

I am in the UEFI Firmware Utility, but I the utility won't let me select 'Secure Boot' to change from 'enable' to 'disable'. There are two other options "Secure Boot Control" and Key Management". I can disable Secure Boot Control, but it doesn't disable Secure Boot.

Secure Boot Control. Secure Boot can be enabled only when
1. Platform Key is enrolled and Platform is operating in User mode and
2. CSM function is disabled in Setup.

Key Management: enables user to modify Secure Boot variables.
Options:
Delete all secure boot variables - force system to setup mode - clear all Secure Boot Variables (PK, KEK, db, dbx). Change takes effect after reboot.

Do I select this last option to delete all secure boot variables?

It's unusual enough I'd reference the Manual on the Asus Support Downloads webpage for your model, or contact Asus Support if still under one year warranty to ask them for sure.

However if you're not worried about getting back to Windows 8 then you could Clear them to see if that's enough.

Is CSM accessible in Setup now? If not you may need to force it to Setup, which is the first time I've seen that setting in about a thousand BIOS. CSM most often needs to be disabled to install Win7 as preferred to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums.

Disabled Secure Boot

Disabling Secure Boot Control disabled Secure Boot. But I don't see an option for Legacy Boot Options.

I think the flash drive is not fomatted correctly. I inserted a DVD and it's booting up to it now.
Thank you GregRocker for your help. This install should complete. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Lbarrie and Greg I have this Asus ROG I bought with 7 installed but it was originally intended for 8. Now I do remember having to alter a few BIOS settings including that secure boot and another that I will have to search that thread for - for it to boot anything like normal.

One thing I had to do was to update the BIOS before I could install any 7 drivers and it was a real pain as I don't like messing with that stuff but all was ok as it turned out the safe flash worked fine for me.

My advice is that Lbarrie you contact any local Asus service centre and I don't mean the "local" or global support sites because I found them less than helpful, and they are mostly located in some Asian country like the Philippines . I see you are in Utah so not knowing the larger cities there I will leave it to you to find one nearest you.

The local service centre in Sydney (my nearest) helped me out way better than the others especially the driver link for the NVidia GPU that is onboard.

Anyway I shall try looking for that thread and the settings.

Ok. I've decided to sell my laptop, but I have this dual boot option that comes up from the Windows 7 install:

Windows Install
Windows 8.1

How do I remove the partial Windows 7 install and edit the boot option? Thanks guys.

In Disk Mgmt Delete the 7 Partition or Volume - Delete unless it's System Active in which case we need to see a screenshot: Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

Then extend the 8 partition into its space: Partition or Volume - Extend

This should remove the Dual Boot menu but if not look on the msconfig>Boot tab to delete the 7 listing.
