Windows 7: How To Dualboot W7 and Linux

How To Dualboot W7 and Linux

I would like to learn some linux and for that i need a secondary OS, I want to keep my Internal as my Windows 7 drive and that has boot priority but i want the linux to run from partition 2 (or 1) on an external HDD

is this possible

Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick | USB Pen Drive Linux

Never tried to run Linux from an external HDD, but you could try out the Linux Distro of your choice on a flash drive as well.

I just read the widnows 7 tutorial on how to do it and somewhere in the setup it asks you what partition you want to install it so i think that my answer

after downloading linux and installing on my second partition but when i select my boot order to my external hdd, it just doesnt do anything, I click CTRL ALT DLT to restart
