The solution when Updates fail leaving Windows 7 unbootable is to boot into Windows 7 DVD or
System Repair Disk to System Restore to before the time this occurred. If that fails run Startup Repair a few times with reboots. You should have Restore Points unless someone recklessly turned them off.
Running
HP System Recovery is not the first resort to repair unbootable Windows 7. Work through the steps for
Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start. The DVD is provided to do repairs or reinstall.
If these fail then I would strongly consider getting the vastly superior
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 since HP has the worst load of preinstalled crapware in the industry, which throttles Windows 7 from its its native perfect performance on adequate hardware when you have a perfect install.
Pay attention to how the netbook lid is set in Power Options: SHut down, sleep, hibernate, do nothing. It may have interfered somehow with the updates.
