I'm not saying that I support or recommend or advocate the act of buying Windows 7 Upgrade to do this if Windows 7 is your first operating system ever. Both my friend and I own legit copies of XP, so all we were doing was a superior installation method.
The same holds true for Windows 8 because Paul Thurrott has a guide for Windows 8 too.
