Upgrade choice XP or Vista

I have XP home & Pro. I also have Vista. All three activated. I plan on keeping the XP Pro for my shop use. Question... I am going to go the upgrade route. Would it be better to upgrade with XP or Vista? I plan on doing a clean install, either way. I'm wondering what's going to happen when, in the future, when we need or want to re-install Windows 7 to get that fresh start environment. I tend to install a lot of cute little programs that seem like a good idea at the time but seem to never be that useful later on.

I forgot about the fact that you're not supposed to use the qualifying OS anymore. So in this case it would be better to upgrade from Vista. That way you can continue to use XP without violating the license agreement.

So if I upgrade from XP, I can no longer use my XP at all, forever?

Afaik you can only use it as a basis for upgrade.

Since I have 1 Vista and 2 XP's (home & Pro) I'm leaning towards using the XP home since that Key will be killed after installation of 7. I have several ide hard drives that I no longer use. I plan on using Clonezilla and making a complete backup in case my new install ever goes south on me. At least I'm hoping that will work.

yeah in that case I would use XP home as a basis for the upgrade.

I've never used Clonezilla, so I can't comment on that.

I'm not sure if the XP key would be "killed" instantly. Quite possible, but it might also be possible to call up Microsoft and get a new key should you need to clean install Windows 7 again in the future.

At this point I'm not sure about anything. We can all thank Microsoft for making this so clear.

Your questions are mute and as you stated you will CLEAN install ea NEW OS. therefore "UPGRADE" IS MUTE AND NOT EVEN CONSIDERED.

I took "upgrade route" to mean he is going to purchase the "upgrade" version of Windows 7 rather than the full version. In that case I would still consider it an "upgrade" even though he would have to do a clean install.

I am only talking about using the Windows 7 UPGRADE version (disk) because of the cost difference. It's too easy to save files and data to worry about not having to reinstall a few programs. I would rather spend a couple of nights reinstalling stuff than to sit in front of the TV anyway. Not to mention the saved $$'s

Sorry I didn't read them all. You are correct. I have pre ordered the Windows 7 upgrade.
