    Badly upgraded

    Hey
I've recently purchased an upgrade CD from xp to windows 7 after making sure I had all the criteria right. I followed the steps to the letter but when I tried exctracting the old files I got an error message saying
"This version of update\update.exe in not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64(64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."
There's even a warning message at the bottom right corner sating my Windows copy isn't genuine though I bought this and the previous one at a real store.

    Also, I'm a noob.

    Help, please?

Sounds like your trying to do an inplace upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. You have to do a custom upgrade. The steps should be listed in Pebbly`s suggestion.

    Contact Gregrocker, he`s a pro.

I don't know what you mean by "extracting the old files". Are you trying to copy out files from windows.old?

    Please clarify that.

Sound like she`s trying to do it from windows.

You have to drop the dvd into the drive and restart the machine then boot from the dvd. Don`t let the pc go into windows.
