Fresh copy of win 7 won't go past starting windows screen

Wow, iv'e been installing o/s's for a long time and windows 7 many times but this one has me stumped. for the last two days I couldn't get past the completing installation screen installing 64bit win7 ultimate. Read a lot of posts and seems like a common error. The following have been done to no avail

1 Disabled just about all hardware in bios
2 Tried ACHI and Compatible mode
3 Tried the shift f-10 and try to force it to reboot using explorer.exe (someone told me about)
4 Tried installing in safemode )still hangs)
5 Burned a new iso to dvd windows 7
6 Nothing connected to laptop except screen and keyboard

Now I did have some sucess when I disabled all hardware in bios and put the controller in compatible mode. When installing with this config It did get past the completing installation and rebooted but got stuck on the starting wondows screen.

Now my laptop. This is a Toshiba A505 with core 2 duo 4 gb ram and the HHd is 620gb

If I cant get this fixed tonight I'm going to fry's electronics tomorrow and buy a new drive. To let you know this 620gb drive came out of one of my customers machines with a bad motherboard, but formatted the partition in parted magic and it says the drive is healthy ???.

Could this be a bad drive, or can any one tell me what to do next

    Thanks !!

If you have an EFI BIOS then you must take extra steps to install to UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums

If no EFI BIOS or you want to bypass it:

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS, enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module, set DVD drive first to boot, HD second. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
    CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
    FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
    ACTIVE
    EXIT
    EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of marking it Active which overcomes certain install failures.

I did everything in your post... During diskpart when I typed fs=ntsf label"windows 7" I got a virtual disk error reading " Incompatible FILE SYSTEM" I was able to partition 100gb install partition, so when I go to advanced options I used Win7 utility to format the partition and then I installed. Everything went fine but after the system restarted it got stuck on updated registry. I ley it go for about 45 min. then I shut down adn restarted and now its stuck on starting windows...

I failed to mention that I have no LCD screen in this laptop and I am using an external VGA monitor?? would this cause the problems I am having?

The Diskpart error happens when you type incorrect characters or don't have the spacing right. Double check and try again so you full format an Active Primary NTFS partition which overcomes some installation woes.

I'd try entering Device Manager during install to see if there is device in error (!) to disable it to get install to complete, then update it from the desktop after it completes: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation

Confirm you reset BIOS to defaults, and wiped the HD with Diskpart Clean Command? If probs persist test the HD with maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

I thank all with the help with this but I'm leaning more toward replacing the disk. I ran a full disk check using windows xp and my 620gb HHD attached to a usb adapter. Result: Several error 51 and 55 ...

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume E:.

So, wasn't that what I just did, or should I open CMD and do " chkdsk/e ???? I don't think there is anything else I can do, I think the drive is toast... Let me know what you think, I already have ebay open looking for the best price on a new stat...

    Thanks !!

I was quite specific that you should run the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan. Did you miss that?

Then run full Disk Check from the installer's Command Line accessing System Recovery Options

You may have a bad burn with Hitachi DFT which is quite good. If another burn won't boot and run correctly then try the installed version from XP.

I'd at least check the SMART status from XP with Hard Disk Sentinel trial download and CrystalDiskInfo - Software

You can also run Partition surface test with Partition Wizard.

Thanks for all who gave there input and helped with this issue. The drive was defiantly on the way out. The last and final time I tried to install windows 7, I got a message that said back up your files your disk is failing. So with that said I went to BestBuy and purchased a Seagate 1TB drive, the installation went the smoothest I have ever experienced, with no....issues at all.
