Operating system install on external dock

Hey there everyone I am having a little trouble trying to figure out how to install an operating system on a hard drive that is externally docked on my multi-function HDD Dock that is connected usb. The hard drive is currently locked out from a virus.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Sorry, I decided to put the hard drive, I was worried I didn't have the old connections but I do, but now when I try to reinstall windows XP on it, I get a blue screen so I am stuck at that point? Should I wipe the hard drive clean before I try to do it?

Plug the HD in internally with all other HD's unplugged.

Boot the XP CD to create a full disk partition and Full Format it before install.

Does not work because I get a blue screen before I even get to that part.

First be sure you're using an XP CD with SP3.

Then if the problem recurs it's likely because XP is too old to have the modern SATA driver your controller requires: SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD.

Much easier to virtualize XP from within Windows 7 using freeware like Virtual Box. XP Mode is included in Ultimate and Pro.

You can also get almost any XP program to install to Windows 7 using Compatibility Mode

The hard drive is an older one, it uses Molex and the ribbon cable. So I don't know if that makes a difference?

Does the XP CD work on other hardware?

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals including the dock.

So I had unplugged my main drive and the external dock, but I still get this message every time it will say Windows is loading drivers, ect and then when it gets to the last bit it gives me a BSOD.

Sorry for the bad quality.

The error is almost always lack of SATA drivers. If you have floppy support (yes, XP is that old) you can install them at the F6 prompt, otherwise you'll need to slipstream them as given earlier.

One completely different option you have is to install the XP in VMware and then move the VMware folder to the external drive. That has many advantages and you don't get booged down with driver problems. Then you can run XP side by side with your host system.

Here is a tutorial on VMware that was written for Windows 8 - but it is the same for XP. Just select another OS in one of the first Windows (you'll see). VMware Player - Install Windows 8

Here is a tutorial on how to move the folder to the external drive. It uses a Linux distro as an example but XP would work the same way. Portable OS - Carry your OS on an External Drive
