It's the exact same OS with a few expensive extra features that can be unlocked which 90% if users don't even need: Compare Windows 7 Editions - Windows 7 Forums

If you still need Ultimate then you can insert an Ultimate retail or Anytime Product Key into Windows Anytime Upgrade - How to - Windows 7 Forums

If the Home Basic installation is corrupt, would an Anytime Upgrade do anything to fix it?

(Not a rhetorical question.)

The Upgrade probably wouldn't run if OS was too corrupt since it only unlocks features in the extant OS. .

Better to run a Repair Install which is same-version Upgrade over itself while keeping all files, settings in place.

But first let us know what the exact symptoms are, start on the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Often times running SFC /SCANNOW Command will reverse corruption encountered with a theme modification. If you can't run it from Windows 7 then run SFC /SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot from Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick.

You need to burn the ISO provided in the Repair Install tutorial to disk or flash stick using Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool. Then you can run the repairs in the steps I gave you or do the Repair Install if SFC or the other steps aren't sufficient.

Run the sfc /scannow command before you do anything, as suggested.

hey gregrocker - extant - interesting word. Had to look it up - in existance, as opposed to extinct. Respect to GR.

Shorter way of saying "existent."
