    Help needed please

Hello I am new to forum and not sure of where to post this.

I have a 32bit Vista laptop and am wondering if I can install Windows 8 Pro 32bit straight over the Vista.

The machine only has 2GB RAM will this be enough to run 8 Pro as the Vista is really out of whack.:)

Hi Maroon Machine, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 from Vista only by doing a clean install, meaning you need to reinstall all your software but can keep your personal files if you want to. An in-place upgrade is not possible from Vista.

Eight runs on 2 GB but if it runs well enough for you is impossible to tell. I would repartition the HDD and first install it as dual boot to test and only remove Vista if you are satisfied.

Thanks Kari but switched on the laptop this morning only to find it will only boot to safe mode. Have done chkdsk and scannow plus system restore - no go

Hello Steve. I would recommend upgrading to w7 instead, it will run OK.
If the laptop has its own recovery partition you could try that to put it back like it was when you bought it. Back up all of your personal Data first though.

Yep I suppose I should have listened to my brother ICit2 but have finally worked it out a bit but agree 7 is not so complicated. But when I saw the Windows 8 retail for 8 pounds (English) in 32bit and 64bit versions I thought I couldn't go past that.

He reckons I can just get another hard disk drive and do the 7 on it so I have a few options. We should have cleaned the old hard drive first. Still it's working now and he is going help me sort things out.

How did you/John get it running?

You can also run a Repair Install using the Vista ISO download installer for your licensed versions.

If that doesn't help you can also follow these same steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall l of Vista.

Vista is a tolerable OS which if installed as shown in the blue link will give you nearly perfect performance, thereby getting the full $100+ value of the OS which came preinstalled.
