Install Win 7 OS on Acer Netbook without DVD player?

    Hello all,

I just got my Acer Netbook back from repair and they replaced the HHD, but reinstalled Linux, so what is the best way to reinstall MS OS? A friend installed it for me when it was new, but he is no longer here and I dont have an external hard drive?
I also have a Acer Laptop with DVD player, can I use this somehow or do I need to buy an external player or just take it to some computer shop?

    Hi,

If you have the ability to boot from a USB thumb drive, you can install Windows 7 using that.

    You will need:

    1. A 4GB USB flash drive - the entire USB drive will be formatted in Step 3 (see below)
    2. The Windows 7 ISO for which your netbook is authorised
    3. The Windows 7 USB Tool to write the ISO into a bootable format on the USB flash drive
    4. A Product Key to authorise the installation (look under your netbook case)

You, of course, need to perform step 3 on another Windows computer (a friends for example).

Here are some useful installation guides to refer to if you need:
USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

    Hi Golden, thanks..

So to be sure I uderstand, first I download Win 7 ISO that suits the OS I have > Win 7 Pro on disc with product key, then I download Win 7 USB tool? So now I need to copy these to the USB? After that add the OS to USB stick? Then it can used to install on Netbook?
Is this how it works or am I completely off track?

    Hi,

    You almost have it:

    1. Download the ISO to any folder on the computer you are using to create the bootable USB - do NOT copy the ISO to the USB
    2. Download the Windows 7 USB Tool to the computer, and run it - it will install to the computer.

    3. Now find this icon on the Desktop - double click it:

    4. The Windows 7 USB Tool will open. Browse to the location that you saved the ISO too, and click Next.

    5. Once finished, plug the USB into your netbook, and boot from the USB to install Windows 7.

    Hi Golden

    excellent, sounds great .

One last Q? The netbook currently has Linux on it, so wil this OS just overwrite it and install Win 7?

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

During installation, you will get an opportunity to format the disk (I think its the 5th screen into the process), you should do that, and then proceed with the installation.

Refer to the diagram immediately below Step 8 here to see what I mean.

       Information
We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

A friend installed it for me when it was new,
Did your friend not make the USB Recovery drive.

Delete all partitions when you get to Step 8 Golden refers to above in Clean Install Windows 7,
then create new as you wish, format to install to first large partition (ignore the 100mb boot partition it creates).

Be sure to follow the steps to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 as you'll get and keep a perfect install as long as you stick with the tools and methods given there.

You aren't booting from the USB.

When the PC starts up, keeping hitting the ESC or DEL key to enter the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, find the option that allows you to place the 'Boot from USB' 1st in the list of items to boot from. Once you have done that, exit and save the BIOS settings you just changed, and at next boot up it should boot from the USB.

Upload photo's of your BIOS settings if you have any trouble.
