Nah - I had two VMs open, an RTM with Dave's COMPONENTS hive loaded and an SP1 with it loaded - I forgot that I had IE9 in the SP1 install, and hadn't installed the KB in the RTM...
Too clever for my own good :)

    Dave.

Please copy the entire contents of the Code box above to Notepad, and save as keys.reg

then, please load the hive using
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS

then double-click on the saved keys.reg file - accept the warnings, and you should get a success message.

reboot, and run a new CheckSUR report.
It's a nightmare juggling hives sometimes. I was sourcing some keys earlier from a hive then when I came to unload them all at the end, HKLM\COMPONENTS just would not unload. I got access denied errors no matter what I tried... until I realised it was my actual hive and Windows Update was using it Not my finest moment!

I assumed you'd want me to reboot, re-run, repost.
    Code:

    Checking Component Store

    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 244
     No errors detected
This looks like a VERY good thing. And:
    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkntfs c:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    C: is not dirty.

    C:\Windows\system32>fsutil dirty query c:
Volume - c: is NOT Dirty
So now I ought to be able successfully to run sfc or Windows Update? Or an in-place/upgrade OEM install? I have to ask before trying.

And should I / could I do anything to remove leftovers from unsuccessful attempts at the latter (something tells me there's a help document about that)?

Sorry to pepper you with questions. I wasn't sure we'd get this far; my enthusiasm is ignited at the prospect of using Windows eventually (soon) for something other than repairing Windows. :)

Give SFC /SCANNOW a whirl and see what it has to say- attach the CBS.log file to your reply

    Sadly I am still getting:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Ownership issue? That's what I think. The same bad Windows Update download that screwed up my component store rewrote my ownerships, I think. (I am the only user and, it being Home edition, I have only my own User account which does have Admin privileges.)

I did run sfc at an elevated prompt.

My CBS.log is 1.5 MB uncompressed. Do you want that, or shall I archive it and let another sfc-attempt generate a new fresh (smaller) one?

    Hi Dave,

Just stepping in quickly whilst Noel is offline.

If you could zip up your CBS log and attach it to your post, that would be great!

    Hi Dave,

Your CBS log indicated that there was registry problems with one of the keys in your components hives so I had a look at it. In your VersionedIndex subkey one of the keys had an embedded null in it which is why SFC failed. There was also several bitflips present as you can see in the image below, those < characters shouldn't be there.

And sorry to save the worst news until last, but your registry is pretty much destroyed. It has lost most of it's structure and replaced it with complete garbage. You should have thousands of keys beginning with amd64_ but as you can see, this isn't the case! It's beyond repairable now

Something has gone very, very wrong with your computer hardware so I would urge you to backup all of your data as soon as possible before we continue to troubleshoot this. Whatever the outcome of the testing tools we will use shortly, a clean install is the only way you're going to fix this I'm afraid.

Firstly I want you to test your RAM with memtest:

    RAM - Test with Memtest86+

    Then run a chkdsk scan:

    Disk Check

Hi DaveF, NoelDP, Golden and GregRocker

Please forgive me in advance if I'm barking up the wrong tree on this thread, but would it help DaveF if he was to use the WSUS Offline Updater to get his Windows Updates ? Just a thought.

WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

    Kind Regards, Neil.

He has factory preinstalled Win7 which is corrupt to begin with and which no tech enthusiast would run. I've advised him to get a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which I hope he is considering while he rearranges the deck chairs on the Titanic.
