Installed new Samsung 840 ssd in Win7 custom build.

Hello all, I have a few questions and was wondering if you guys could help. I custom built my PC about 2 years ago and I love it but I really would like to speed it up. Here are the specs:

NZXT M-59
ASUS M5A97
AMD FX-6100-(JUST UPGRADED THAT FROM AMD PHENOM II X3 TRIPLE CORE)
8GB G.SKILL RIPJAWS
1 TB WEST DIG HDD.

I just purchased a Samsung 840 120gb SSD and installed it. My question is;

I want to transfer over the OS to the SSD but the partition it is on is too gig, its like 409gb. Is there a way to do a fresh install of WIN7 onto the ssd and boot from that? Then i could move over all the files from the WD hdd. Or how do i just burn an image of just the os onto the sdd? I know that the whole partition wont fit. i just want the os and boot records put on the ssd and then boot from that. Thank you all.

I would recommend that you split your current C partition. Move all user data (documents, pictures, music, videos) to a seperate data partition. Then clean-up the remaining OS partition (run CCleaner, delete the hiberfile, reduce the pagefile to 2GB, etc.).

Then make an image of C which I am sure will fit at that point. Here is a tutorial you might want to read.

OK, I decided to just install the Win7 fresh onto the SSD. After i did that i have a dual boot on retstart and i can choose which to boot from. The default is the SSD but it gives me the option to boot into the old HDD which is fine. Now I have email Windows Live Mail that I want to transfer to the SSD, then I want to save everything else on the HDD to an ext drive, then wipe the old HDD to use for storage(1tb). Anyone know the best way to do this? What I want is to have the SSD for booting and a few programs and the old HDD for storage. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

1. On a fresh installation you cannot transfer any programs from another installation. You have to reinstall those programs.

2. I suggest you post a picture of your Disk Management. It looks like the bootmgr of the SSD system landed on the HDD (because you did not disconnect the HDD when you installed on the SSD). If that is the case, you have to make some arrangements before you can get rid of the HDD system. But only Disk Management will clarify that point.

Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image - Windows 7 Help Forums

Always unplug all other HD's during Clean Reinstall

If the HD was plugged in the boot files probably still remain on it. We'll need to see it first but the normal procedure is to Mark Win7 Partition Active, power down to unplug the HD, boot into Win7 installer to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts and holds the System Active flags.

You can then plug back in the HDD making sure SSD remains set to boot first, move the data off to wipe the HDD with Diskpart Clean Command, repartition in Disk Mgmt.
