windows 7 reboot loop during installation

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my laptop through a USB key, but so far I've been unsucessful. What's been happening is that everything goes fine until the installer needs to reboot itself, then the computer reboots, but installation process begins again from the beginning. No error messages or anything like that. I've begun the installation process 3 times now, each time the installer thinks it is installing a new copy.

For reference, I have an IBM Thinkpad T43, and I'm installing Windows 7 Professional.

You may need to remove USB key before reboot.

IBM Thinkpad T43 may be a bit old for win7.

After the pc restarts does it ask you to hit any key to run. If so have you tried not hitting any key.

1. USB HDD (the key with windows 7 on it)
2. USB FDD
3. USB CD
4. Legacy Floppy drives
5. DVD drive
6. Hard drive

not really sure what 2-4 are, don't think they have anything in them. don't have any cds in my dvd drive. i'm going to try boot from the usb key, then when windows 7 installer wants to reboot, change the boot priority to the HD where i was installing it
