    Help please with OS ID

I have a member who I think may have a bad OS on his system. Now I have asked him to run the MGADiag.exe

But I am a hardware plonker and am not sure what to look for when searching for a counterfeit / pirated copy as he tells me he got the machine with Ultimate installed but no media for it and the mention of an installed Ultimate immediately gets my suspicions up as does mention of upgrading to Ultimate.

Show us a screen shot of Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System. That's going to tell us, I believe.

Does it still do Windows Updates? That's often a good way to tell.

Thanks PB4UGO I'll get him to do that - to be honest I ma beginning to think this poor fellow has been sold a pup. It is an older laptop with DDR2 in it and access to Vista driver only which makes me wonder what sort of state this machine is in.

I am always a bit suspicious of folks who have upgraded or have put on Ultimate to a machine too as it smacks of some skullduggery in my mind. But perhaps I am being a little overly so.

Tell him to update Windows 7 up to the latest, then the OS will tell him if it's pirated.

Another way around is to look at the Product ID which is 00426-OEM-8992662-00006

If first three key of the ID is matched then the last part is different (the 00006), it's pirated.

Ok Gary and Roaster I will when I gear back from him with that MGADiag. Strange that I haven't already as he is usually on line every day.

ICit2lol just have him/her become a member. The good folks here will be able to tell whether it legal or not.
If it's legal we will be able to help with any problems.
If it's not legal we will give guidance on how to install a legal copy of Windows 7.
Their is a rash of illegal copies of Ultimate in the last few weeks. Some people have a illegal copy of Windows 7 and don't know it.

ICit2lol with this post I'm trying to be kind and helpful but to the point.

First their is no My System Specs from the OP.
We have no idea what computer the OP has.
The OP has stated that he/she has installed Ultimate and is working on updates.
You have requested the Genuine Activation Log and we still don't have one posted.
I have read through that thread twice and it is impossible to follow the OP. At least for me. Is the OP following Brinks or Greg's Tutorials on a clean install? Who knows. All the OP post are tids and tads of what he or she has done and their is no pattern.
It feels to me the tail is wagging the dog.

*** For me; No specs and No Genuine Action Log, No help.

Things one needs to install Windows 7 on a computer.
    1. Hardware that will meet the needed specs
    2. A good copy of Windows 7 SP-1
    3. A legal matching COA for the operating system.
    4. Follow one of the several Tutorials on how to install Windows 7.
Until those things are met the rest of the chit chat means nothing to me.
That is why I'm posting here and not there.
