What more direction do you need? Please show me what is unclear about this:

Enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then run all available Important and Optional Windows Updates. After requested reboots go right back and Check for Updates again, until there are no more. Then check Device Manager if any Devices are in error, import them from the Dell Support Downloads webpage for your tag number.
There are not two versions Dual Booting on the drive, only one which looks correct.

You said you set up a separate HD for the 64 bit install, but where is it? Do you get a Dual Boot menu when you start the PC?

Maybe the boot manager still has the 32-bit entry, even if there is no more Operating System connected anymore. This tutorial to remove the entry.

Frankly, doing what was done is a very weird way to do things and could have screwed up something. I think a reinstall is the only way.

EDIT: now the tutorial's link is fixed! Yay!

That link tells how to add a hard drive to a laptop.

Debra, are you sure you were connected to a genuine MS site?

gregrocker -snips so you could review the status of hard drive mgmt. I am seeing lots of responses, but I seems wise to communicate with one person. Win 32bitpro as well as Win7 64bit pro How to uninstall win 32bit ver-windows-update-settings-result-last-evenings-update-procedure.pngI attach snip showing the update settings were already as you asked - I did this over again and ran update, snip shows status report.
"You said you set up a separate HD for the 64 bit install, but where is it? Do you get a Dual Boot menu when you start the PC? " I'm not sure I did - if so no that is not true. I used one 160 gb new hd. I was told not to partition it and that Windows would load up automatically and prepare the hard drive. Don't know if you read my comment about doing the update/driver check using the device mgr for each item, asking it to look on internet. I did double check with Dell and its own drivers loaded on laptop with Vista. I did this more than once because I believed this was a software issue and I looked at the drivers first - thinking I must have missed an update. I was disappointed to find there just weren't many for this 1520. I will do this over again when I can sit and perform this for a long time. Probably between now and Friday this week. Appreciate you're hanging on with me. Thanks Gregwalker - I'm in CA around Santa Cruz, we live on bluff over ocean. Glad to see your surfboard. Debra1533

    Hi Debra -

If you're going to do it over then stick with the steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

As it says put your wireless adapter in the backup so if it isn't provided during install you can install it to get online.

Then after enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) run all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates. These should provide most of the rest of the drivers as well as important performance and security updates. After each requested reboot, go back and Check for Updates again. (That means click on Check for Updates, ignoring what it says about what's available.)

Only then would I import any drivers still missing in Device Manager. There is no reason to run Auto Update from Device Manager. Stick with the steps in the tutorial to get a perfect install.
