That's the Product ID.
The Product Key is 25 characters, 5 groups of 5. It's on a COA sticker pictured in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which you should be following if you want to get and keep a perfect install.

I have been following the guide, but I can't find the COA sticker anywhere on my machine. I built it myself a few years ago and j could've sworn I stuck the sticker inside but apparently not... have you got any suggestions on what I could do? Thanks very much, really appreciate the help you've given me.

How would you have the Product ID and not the Product Key? Did you run the Belarc Advisor
audit? It should have been run if you couldn't find the COA sticker pictured in the tutorial. It would have produced the ID and Key. So I wonder why you have one and not the other, as that rarely happens.
It is too late now to boot into WIn7 to audit the key if you've already formatted or reinstalled.
If so then you'll have to call MS Customer Service to see if they can provide a key with the Product ID as they sometimes do when the sticker is worn off. However there is a good chance they won't.

I can't find the box, that's my problem... Before I did reinstalled I wrote down the Product ID from the Control Panel (thinking it was the Product Key). After that, I reinstalled, and tried to run Belarc, which gave me a key that was a default key and not valid for activation.
So basically, I should've ran Belarc to find out my Product key before I reinstalled, but I thought I already had it when I just had the ID. And now I've reinstalled, I can't find out the key!
How do I contact Microsoft to request a new key?

If you've only deleted the partition using the installer and not yet formatted or reinstalled then it can be undeleted using Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard Video Help. The reason I offer this is because it's unclear if you are having the failure at the point where you provide the key before install, or if you've actually completed the install.

Do you have any backup images of the install you could restore to audit the Product Key?
Do you have the bank information for the purchase you could contact the retailer for help?
If you need to buy another key, use a major retailer like New Egg or Amazon. Google Shop the best prices. The best price break is for Upgrade version if you have any old copy of XP or Vista (which doesn't need to be installed) or another Builder's OEM.
