I have xp pro installed on disk that might be going. Will be installing win7 upgrade on new hard drive (2ter H/D,3 partitions). I understand that I have to put in a xp key code to get it to work. Can I use the xp code from another retail copy of xp.Meaning after install win 7 I will connect old h/d with xp (do not want to use that key code) and try to dual boot.
My old drive has xp as C drive. I believe with the new win 7 I will be able to put any dive letter I want. It should not affect a dual boot system.
Hello Bill,
If it's a retail upgrade box from a legit retailer, then it'll be a legal copy of Windows 7.
Technically from the EULA, you only qualify for the upgrade copy of Windows 7 if you are upgrading from Vista. Otherwise, you would need to purchase a full copy of Windows 7 instead.
Hope this helps, :)
Shawn
If memory serves me you won't be asked to enter the XP product code as verification. Windows 7 will look for the installed qualifying OS during install. If there isn't one it won't install. You'd have to do this > Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
