Trying to re-install windows but keep getting 0x8000857 errors
Hi
I am no PC expert but have been goggling solutions to fixing my poorly all in 1 desktop computer. When it first stooped booting tried startup repair but got stuck continually looping. So then ran testdisk. This sees 3 partitions. The first is 100MB (c:) ntfs, second is 272.9 GB(D:) ntfs and 3rd is 15.9GB(lenovo_system) (E:) also ntfs. If I try to change to D: gives cyclic redundancy error, CHKDSK will not run as drive is considered RAW. I copied all files I wanted off D: usung puppy linux which was able to mount each partition and see all files. I have also made backup copies of all data on c: and E: I then used windows 7 system desk to do custom install and deleted partitions 1 and 2, then selected new as this was only option available - it created 2 partitions (100M) and (272.9 GB) but when I selected partition 2 and tried to continue installing it stopped due to error 8000857 error. I tried quick formatting and proper format from diskpart but both of these fail on partition 2 due to invalid parameter. From testdisk I have looked at the boot sectors and the MFT are bad for partition 1 - boot sectors orig and backup are identical, partition 2 current boot and backup are not identical and there is no access to orig - (if i try ot list files says there is a bad filesystem) if I rebuild bootsector then it allows me to see the original filesystem image I had before I tried to reinstall windows 7 but if I try to overwrite the current boot sector it fails. Finally I tried some of the active partition softwar eto check the boot sectors - that indicates that partition 2 is bad but I did not want to purchase the software which claims it will fix it.
When I tried to format the partition from active partition it also failed. Does this point to a faulty hard disk so whatever I do windows will fail to install or can I try diskpart clean to fix bad boot sectors. Also the other thing I wanted to ask is if during clean (as the 3rd partition will be deleted if I then recreate that partition and copy the file back with the partition table for that volume/partition be automatically updated by the copy software - i.e. once a partition is recreated say in diskpart how does it build its file table. (Just worried that the lenovo system data cannot be restored ?)
Didn't want to hand computer over to a PC repair company if they will effectively be reinstalling windows 7 as felt I could/should be able to manage it. If it's likely the disk then we can presumably get a replacement and clean install windows onto it ?
Hope you can help feel i've tried pretty much everything from internet research.
