Hello, everyone. Restoring sure takes a long time but everything is back where it should be which is very much a relief. First off, XP was having speaker issues too but of a different sort when I booted there this morning. However the driver link you provided, Kaktussoft put XP straight. The two sliders match each other for volume and even muting which is awesome!!!
The driver for Windows 7 however did not provide the same perfect fix. It's doing some strange things.
1-When I hit mute on the keyboard slider it does indeed mute the system stray slider.
2-However, both volume sliders do the opposite of what they should. When muted there is sound and when either slide is at any volume level there isn't any sound.
3-When I move the keyboard slider from the lowest volume up to the maximum volume, the system tray volume "bounces" between maybe level 4 and 5 over and over again. Same situation when I move the keyboard slider back down to minimum.

I hope that clearly describes the effects. Let me know if something confuses you. For Windows 7 I did create a restore point before installing that driver as per instructions on a tutorial here at Sevenforums. If I need to do a System Restore I can do that following another tutorial I found here but it asks me to disable my Antivirus program. How do I do that with MSE? What might you two experts suggest?

To recap: winxp is fine now. Correct?
win7: pressing mute button on keyboard ... gives a red sign on bottom of slider.
When you have a red sign there ... there should be no sound at all. But you say works just the opposite?

win7: volume sliders and keyboard to set sound louder both have the same problem?

bounces" between maybe level 4 and 5 over and over again=>but 5 is louder than 4?

    Everything correct thus far.

If I understand your questions right, when I use the keyboard slider to increase or decrease the volume, the System Tray volume slider "bounces" between 4 and 5. In other words it goes up to 5, then down to 4, then up to 5 and back down to 4, over and over again as I move the keyboard slider up or down.

I see that there is an Uninstall file in the Windows 7 driver you linked me to. I'm gonna try that and then try the Acer website that Greg suggested a few posts ago. Will let you know how it goes soon. Keep your fingers crossed.

Well, I've tried installing and uninstalling and installing and uninstalling a few different versions of the launch manager driver without success. I've even tried the acer power management technology stuff too. They didn't do anything for me so they were uninstalled too. The problem of the bouncing volume indicator on the System Tray slider persists. I am still trying to go through search results for "acer aspire 8730 launch manager vista 32". From other forums I've stumbled upon with this search suggest that vista 32 bit is a better shot than vista 64 or windows 7 64. It seems though that the drivers I do download that claim to be for vista 32 bit when launching to install show up in big letters "64-bit".

I'm still trying but it sure is frustrating. In my naïve world, it shouldn't be this difficult. I worry about what my registry looks like now with all the installs and uninstalls. My impossible search continues.....

It's not a launch manager issue!! Even with the mouse (clicking on mute) and make it louder... works strange.
Install the lauch manager I posted a few days ago.

Uninstall the sound driver, also from disk if it asks so. Then reboot.

Don't worry about it. This is how these small issues get worked out. Sometimes after a Clean Reinstall some OEM software must be reinstalled in a certain combination to get a needed function to work. We've never not been able to get it sorted when persisting

If you're worried about the effect of installing and uninstalling software to try various configurations, remember that you can System Restore to before you started without a trace being left in the registry. In fact you can go back as far as you want.

Have you asked google in every way possible about the exact issue you're having. You said you asked it about launch manager but that is not your issue, just one possible solution. Ask about the on-screen volume controls after clean reinstall for your model. Someone else has likely dealt with this.

Okee dokee, Kaktussoft. I have installed both of the drivers you suggested. It still works goofy and opposite in Windows 7 but Greg says to be patient and persistent. It will get resolved somehow.

I think is what I started with in Google searches was "Acer Aspire 8730 volume slide". I checked out:

    Acer Aspire 8730 + Windows 7 - Acer - Laptops & Notebooks
I tried most of the stuff here except for 'sefarm's' suggestions for hacking.

Volume Control Problems on Acer Aspire 8730
This had some stuff I tried to especially trying to find this 'theacerguy' and his .rar file but no luck.

Volume Control Problems on Acer Aspire 8730 - laptop answers
Some of this was the same as the above link but I went through it just the same.

All of the above links mention the Launch Manager so what else could I conclude?

    http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=19218
This one mentioned what sounded like the same problem I have but talks about stuff I don't understand at all (keycombo & grub arguments?). And it doesn't go through to a solution anyway.

aspire 8730 Volume control issue - Acer Community
Acer Aspire 8730 volume slider help?
Acer Aspire 8730 Audio Control Malfunction - Windows Vista
Users posted my problem and no one responded.

Cannot control volume in Acer Aspire 8730 - Portable Devices
No solution worked through there, save sending the laptop into Acer for a repair.

By now I'm up to page 3 on Google and beyond this the relevance to my issue is way down so I stop checking sites.

So that's what it looks like.

For the time being I cannot find a solution that works. I'll take a peek from time to time to see if there is a solution that will work. Until then, let's call this thread solved. I'll click on the green button and do it. If however, that's something only a moderator or guru can do then please do. You guys have been amazing. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for working so hard to make my laptop the best machine in the world.
