Multiple errors when formatting, partitioning, installing Windows

Both of the scans I ran were from the Western Digital diagnostic tool that ya'll recommended. It gave me the option of the quick scan, extended scan, zero write, test result, and something else I can't remember off the top of my head. I'm not sure what you mean by what "type" of scan I ran. I had to boot to the cd and it ran from there. Also, I'm not sure what "SMART" data is, or if that's what I've been scanning.

So you think I should stop the formatting process? I'm thinking I'll let it got through tonight and tomorrow morning, and then after church if it's still at 1% I will stop it and run both scans you recommended. If I do that, I'll try to keep my phone handy to take pictures as it goes. Part of the problem with that is that sometimes the screen just starts flying and I can't even scroll back up to see what all it said.

Now that we know for sure you have the Data Lifeguard CD, can you try running the Extended test again? I've never seen it report SMART data. Is this during the Quick test phase that it normally runs first? Are you telling it to go on to the Extended test? What exactly does it do then? What you'd normally see in Extended Test is it scanning sectors to try to find errors and repair them.

I remember thinking the same thing about it having go thru a quick test first. But when it gave the same errors as it did on the quick test, it didn't give an option to continue. Maybe it was still working on the extended? I'll run that same diagnostic again tomorrow, let you know what happened, and then run the other 2 diagnostics while I wait for your reply.

I think it might be reporting SMART data made available by your BIOS, which is so far below threshold that it won't continue the repair scan.

If the HD is less than a year old it is under Tech Support and full replacement warranty from the manufacturer.

Okay, here is what I've done this morning. The formatting was still at 1%, leading me to believe you're probably right in suggesting I get a new HD. In any case, I ran the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics again. I've attached pictures (I hope they show up).

Yeah it is substituting SMART data provided by BIOS for a scan which it apparently can't or won't run since it's too far below SMART threshold. You can try turning off SMART gathering in BIOS Setup to see if it will force DL to scan the HD, since SMART can show false positives, however those values look so bad that it would probably be smartest to replace the HD.

I'd like to try everything before buying a new HD. How do I turn of SMART? I went to my BIOS setup menu and don't see it anywhere.
