Preparing for Win. 7 install ?

Is it best to stay connected to the Internet while installing Win. 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1, I am do a "clean" install, current OS is XP Pro SP3.

I have read the tutorial, it says yes - just wanted to double check.

AddRam, I was a little confused about this after watching the Video from the win. 7 forums on you tube, haven' t done a new install since XP Pro.

The win. 7 advisor says I will need to up date my LAN driver, I have the new version saved on a disk.

So is turning the router off(unplug) good enough ?

By the way, I am new to this forum, this is my 1'st time posting, most likely not the last, I have looked through the site and like what I see, lots of straight forward information and no BS.

Follow these steps to Clean Install Windows 7.

Put your ethernet and wireless LAN network drivers in your backup so that if one is not provided during install you can install them to get online. Plug in by ethernet cable to your router or modem to also help increase this possibility.

Once you get online, enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3), open Windows Update to Check for Updates, install all IMportant and Optional Updates, with reboots as requested, until there are no more when you check each time. Then import any drivers still missing in Device Manager from the Support Downloads webpage for the PC or device.

Other tips here to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 are the same for retail.

Maybe I should start over here, I am still not clear on some issues and don't want to drag this thread out, so here goes.

Current OS is XP Pro 32 bit SP3, changing to Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1

Ran Windows Advisor: have new drivers from MB web site (Asus)

Install Questions:

1 Will set BIOS to boot from DVD as 1st boot device

2 Will disconnect from back of tower: LAN cable, printer and speakers - will leave connected: mouse, key board and monitor.

3 Do Custom install, I have just 1 partition (c:\) I want to format and install there, do I need to go into "drive options" and check "format" for that drive ?

4 "Recommended settings" - this is where the LAN connection comes into play, do I leave the Ethernet cable connected to the LAN port and tell the installation to get updates now, or NOT have the Ethernet cable connected to the LAN port and update later ??

5 "Network" I will NOT be connected to ANY network, what setting do I use ?? Is there something other than - Home, Work or Public ??

6 At what point during the install do I remove the "install disk" ?

I have read the "Clean Install Tutorial" and watched the Video, there are some differences between the two, hence my questions above.

Your help will be greatly appreciated, a smooth install will be a HAPPY install

If you plug in by ethernet cable as I've already suggested then there's a greater chance you'll start up connected. Have your network LAN driver in your backup in case it isn't provided by installer so you can complete the steps I gave you above to install all Important and Optional Updates. Win7 will connect automatically if plugged in to router/modem once the eithernet driver is installed.

You can remove the install disk after install is over.

Let us know if you have any other question, and how it goes. We can help you find any drivers that are still missing after you enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and run all rounds of Important and Optional Updates, with reboots, until no more are offered when you Check for Updates.
