You can try pasting the file in, it won't harm anything, I think. You may first have to Take Ownership to copy and to replace the one being replaced.

Never mind, it was fixed by a simple chkdsk. It fixed $Bitmap and $Volume.
My 7 machine has successfully been upgraded from XP. So far so good.

Try a different one and see if it helps,

I should remove that tutorial as all the Vista links are invalid now and have been for a few weeks.

Post here and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail addresse mucked up, like abc at xyz DOT com then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.

Pick up the Tutorial at:

STEP THREE
To Create Vista Installation DVD or USB Flash Drive with ISO File

During the install, when asked for the key, don't enter it. You will then be given a menu where you can chose the version you want to install.

I believe you need to do a Clean Install, formatting the hard drive during installation. That means you need to boot the DVD, not start it from a booted XP system.

Just make sure you backup all your data first.

Well, while a clean installtion would be simple, we actually need to upgrade to vista first then windows 7.

An update: i was able to perform a sucusuflly upgrade on another machine that is on XP3 with minimum software and drivers installed. At this point i think there may be a windows update that is causing the issue with the other pc's as they do get stuck at 64%. We just need to figure out which one.
So we know the upgrade is defenetly possible, just the matter of finding that needle in a haystack to get us there now -.-

Why do you need to upgrade to Vista first?
