I'm guessing you have stuff that cannot be reinstalled later?
That being said, I'm not sure why you are not getting the upgrade option,
Maybe you can try a different Vista installation disc.

I`m assuming he`s using a retail Vista dvd and an Upgrade Windows 7 dvd, still waiting for a reply.
Some folks use the Upgrade term too loosely, and by that they just mean they are IMPROVING there pc to Windows 7, not knowing that there actually is software specifically labeled Upgrade.

I usually see people use the word "migrate" when they aren't upgrading but on the other hand I've seen that word used loosely as well. I guess neither upgrade nor migrate are standard.
I don't know if this CD is OEM/Retail/Upgrade but I do see an Upgrade folder on the disk contents, does this mean anything?
I wish I didn't delete my 10GB hidden partition on this computer that came with Vista which I'm guessing stored the Vista installation files in case of emergency.
So you`re saying you have a Windows 7 dvd, and you have no clue what it is ?
Retail comes in a plastic case or a dvd case. And should be halogrammed.
An upgrade dvd will come the same but it`s clearly labeled Upgrade.
OEM should say OEM on the disc, but not necessarily.
Migrate means to take a users data, favorites, email, documents etc back it up, then install a new OS, then put the users data back on the new OS.
Upgrade means to take a machine with XP or Vista or whatever and simply put a new OS on it.
But in this instance it`s important to know exactly what you`re using to do the Windows 7 install, an upgrade disc is clearly labeled on the packaging.
Forget the 7 DVD for now, I'm using my friend's Vista DVD to first upgrade-install to Vista in preparation to upgrade-install to 7. To my best knowledge it's capable of upgrade-installing.
Try a different one and see if it helps,

Remember that you need to legally own a valid qualifying previous version of Windows to use a Upgrade Windows 7, and to stop using (or uninstall) the qualifying OS while you have the upgrade installed. Microsoft only made doing a clean install from a upgrade Windows 7 possible to make it more convenient so you do not have to reinstall both the old Windows version (ex: Vista) and upgrade to Windows 7 everytime you needed or wanted to reinstall.
If you do not legally own a valid qualifying previous version of Windows, then you are violating the terms of Microsoft's Windows 7 End User License Agreement and could get your product key number invalidated by Microsoft. Plus, it is considered illegal.

I don`t think using your friend`s copy of Vista qualify`s but let us know how you make out.
No problem, I have my Vista key on the side sticker of the computer that it came on. But if there's a huge difference between OEM/Retail versions I hope the key matches with whatever version this DVD will upgrade the XP partition to.
Doesn`t his disc say what version it is ? Doesn`t he or she know ?
Your key should work fine.
If you don`t enter the key during the install you will come to a window that lists all the Vista versions, just choose the version you want, then just continue.
But as we`ve all said, you don`t have to install Vista, you just do a clean install with your Windows 7 upgrade disc, and have the key ready when Microsoft asks.
