I don't get an option to upgrade to Vista

I understand that to upgrade from XP to 7 I must first upgrade to Vista. Fine. I have Windows XP Professional 32-bit and have Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I loaded the CD from the desktop but never got that upgrade option, it went straight to asking me which HDD to install it on and cautioning that it will not upgrade but move the old windows to WNDOWS.old folder.

    What am I doing wrong?

You loaded what cd from the desktop ?

    Windows 7 ?

You can`t upgrade from XP to W7, you have to do a clean install, and you don`t have to have Vista installed to upgrade to Windows 7. You just have to have the Vista key available.

What are you going to use to upgrade to Windows 7 ? Is it the upgrade disc ?

The Vista DVD because I'm first upgrading to Vista, then to 7.

You can`t upgrade from XP to W7, you have to do a clean install, and you don`t have to have Vista installed to upgrade to Windows 7.
The second part of your sentence contradicts the first. I'm not going from XP to 7 I'm going XP to Vista to 7 which you then say is unnecessary because XP to 7 is totally possible as long as I have a Vista key.

I'm already looking at Kari's tutorial which clearly instructs to first do an upgrade install with the Vista CD.

The Upgrade license says in part you must first only own a qualifying previous edition of Windows, i.e. XP or Vista. A direct upgrade XP>w7 isn't supported.
As stated you can install w7 without first installing Vista, I have done it myself. See Brink's tutorial.
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

The confusion is in MS terms an Upgrade install keeps most of your installed program and settings.

I suggest you do what Brian says and do a clean install with the Windows 7 upgrade .iso as per Brian's link. And if you have a Windows 7 retail or OEM disc, it is even easier. Why would you want Vista in the middle.

Upgrades are always problematic. They end up with all kinds of gremlins and sometimes they don't work at all.

Thank You Gary and Wolfgang for your support.

What I said was 2 sentences separated by a comma, and both are correct. But if you would like to install Vista anyway then follow Kari`s tutorial.

Once again, you cannot upgrade from XP to 7, and you do not have to have Vista installed to upgrade to Windows 7.

You already qualify by having XP on the machine, so you can then do a clean install with your Windows 7 Upgrade disc.

I already have a clean install of 7. What I intend is to upgrade my primary partition to 7, Vista first since it's necessary.

I am following Kari's tutorial but I'm not getting the same results. No option pops up to upgrade. Why?

Bluebonnet, first you need to fully read the links posted for you,
Why are you so determined to upgrade to Vista only to upgrade to w7?

Do you install disks say "Upgrade" on them?

Is it a Windows 7 Upgrade disc ?

You haven`t answered that question yet.

You DO NOT have to have Vista installed to upgrade to Windows 7.

Also, it`s normal for windows to put your data into a windows.old folder when going from XP to Vista. It`s probably not giving you the upgrade option because you are trying to install Vista from the XP desktop. You should bootup straight from the Vista dvd. Either way you should be backing up your data and make sure your installing on the correct partition.

That`s exactly what it did when I went from XP to Vista over 100 years ago

I do not intend to start over with a clean install (which I already have one partition of). I intend to do an upgrade install. Is this clear?

You should bootup straight from the Vista dvd.
That is exactly what this tutorial says NOT to do.

Is it a Windows 7 Upgrade disc ?

You haven`t answered that question yet.
I did answer that in my first reply to you in post #3.
