I will carefully study all the good stuff I've been sent and then tread carefully. I'll post back when I've done, although may not be for a few days as herself demands I get on with some decorating and attempts to ban me from the pc for longer that a half-hour session.

You are quite right, there is no reason at all why Win 7 (or XP) has to be on any particular drive letter - it was just something I preferred to have Win 7 on C going forward.

Thanks again all.

Just a quick note. There is no SP2 for Windows 7 & there probably will not be one, there is only SP1.

Yes - my fault on this one, it was something I caught out of the corner of my eye on Google - have just just checked and seen that it's stuff like "Microsoft NOT putting out SP2". Thanks guys.

Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 Pro

Hello All,

Just like to say I have sucessfully re-installed Windows 7 from the DVD onto unallocated space on my Disk #1, and as prophesied above by the wise ones, it came up as drive C - so objective achieved.

I still have my original Windows XP install on Disk #0 and by using the bios level boot device choice I have two independently bootable systems (so either boot up as drive C) with the "other" drive available as another drive letter. So, a happy bunny and I can now migrate my stuff from XP to Windows 7 at my leisure and then semi-retire XP when I'm ready.

So many thanks to all who posted the very helpful advice. And I've even finished the decorating

Might to check this out How to Stop System Restore Points from being Deleted in Vista and Windows 7 when Dual Booting with XP don't know if it is still valid. but when I set mine up a couple of years back it was certainly an issue.
