Win 7 install problem. You know, for a change of pace.

I'm trying to install Windows 7. I have a OEM version of Home Prenium Vista, 32 bit. I'm upgrading to 32 bit home prenium windows 7.

It won't install, however. It just gets stuck at 0% of copying windows files. I let it sit for about 4 hours, and no dice. Any advice?

I should note that I wiped my computer beforehand, and restored it to factory settings, so it has only the basic files on it.

Are you using Vista sp1 or sp2?

SP1, because that's what it said it needed before installation.

Before you attempt upgrade again, use task manager and regular way too, to close all programs that you don't need for Vista to run. That includes 3rd party firewalls, antivirus. Basically, everything that you have installed yourself previously. Make sure they aren't running.

None of these things are running. Like say, it's back to factory settings, so I have no special programs on my computer at all.

In this case, I suggest not burning the .iso to DVD. Either make a bootable usb key to install Windows from or mount the .iso with PowerIso and run setup.exe from a virtual dvd drive.

If you actually bought a physical disc, copy its contents in entirety to any folder anywhere on your system first. Then run setup.exe.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, and nothing. Stays at copying files at 0%.

I should note that it doesn't FREEZE. It just stays there for hours on end.

First: Check the hash for the ISO if you downloaded it. Use hashtab to rightclick ISO Properties

Burn and Optical drive are eliminated since you booted from USB and got same exact issue, right?

Since there is no OS the next thing to check out for installer file copying freeze is HDD.

Make a bootable copy of your manufacturer's diagnostic tool. I use GWScan (DataLifeguard) for WD which works on most others. Boot into it and do long test which will find and repair surface problems. Then write zeroes to the drive.

    Report back.

Alright, I'm going to get back to you within the week. My dog just chewed through my laptop power cable, and I'm racing against the clock to order a new one. I'll be back in a while.

Back. I tried booting it from the USB (I'm not comp smart, so I wasn't aware of this option) and it gets hung at the same point; copying files 0%.

As for the Diagnostic tool, I couldn't find one for ASUS laptops, and the one you linked didn't find any troubles.
