    No product key needed ??

    Hi all

I have just done a clean install from vista to win 7 using a upgrade version of win 7 hp, following the tutorial off this site, but when doing the install it didn't ask me for the product key or if i wanted to activate win 7, any one else had this happen, do i need to do anything. When i look at system page it shows a product key that doesn't match the one in the box & there is a button that asks if i want to change the product key, it also states i have 30 days to activate win 7.

    Thanks Steve 208

If you do not activate in 30 days and do not get an extension of time, you can get 2 30 days extensions, you will be shut out of windows every 2 hours, until you activate. It is simple, just activate online, it takes about 5 minutes. Then you will be all set.

Hello Steve, what you are mistaking as a product key on the system page, is actually a Product ID which is completely different.

I suggest just entering the product key you have in the box, activate it, and enjoy Windows 7. :)

    Hi

It does says product id then long number, then it says "change product key" which you can click on. Why do i need a product key if it hasn't asked me for one during install.

    Thanks

Whether they ask or not, if you do not activate with a product key, they will not send updates and cut your service off after 30 days at worst, or 120 days at best.

He is correct, whats the problem using your product key? I see very little reason not to.

Whats the point of having the product key and not using it anyways?

The reason why it did not ask a product key because you performed a clean install using an upgrade DVD. Ideally with the upgrade it will detect an original Windows Vista installed prior to the upgrade and will use that for authentication.

A clean install removes anything on your hard drive before Win7 installs on it. Therefore it would require Authentication.

I don't have a problem using my product key, i posted the query cause i thought you had to input the key during installation & when it didn't ask for one i wondered if this was normal.
